WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- An investigation into a house fire in Winston-Salem led authorities to file child abuse charges against a man.

The charges were filed one week after two children were left home alone before the blaze.

Authorities with the Winston-Salem Police Department said they went to the home late on the night of Feb. 2 and found the children alone. They said Ebony Mack told them he left the children there for undetermined reasons.

Both children were transported to North Carolina Baptist Hospital for treatment and remain in critical but stable condition.

The investigation into the fire is continuing.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem Police have charged a mother with child abuse after her two children were left home alone and found unconscious in a house fire last week.

Ebony Mack, 28, was arrested Thursday night, police said in a news release.

Firefighters responded to the fire at the children’s grandmother’s house on Trellis Lane around 11:40 p.m. Feb. 2. Once firefighters got inside, they found a 9-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy unconscious in a bed.

Both children were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where they were listed in critical but stable condition as of Thursday night.

The grandmother said she left Mack and the two children at her house around 6 p.m. The grandmother said she got a call around 11:30 p.m. that her house was on fire.

Mack was placed in the Forsyth County Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond. Her next court date is scheduled for Feb. 13.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire officials said on Feb. 3 it appears it started in a back bedroom being used to store clothes and toys. The bedroom was across the hall from where the children were found, fire officials said.
