Topeka police detectives are investigating the death of a 2-year-old
girl in August as a homicide, Capt. Jerry Stanley disclosed Thursday.

The child, Gabrielle E. Thompson, was killed at 3:20 p.m. Aug. 2 at 3141 S.E. Dupont.

“It is being investigated as a homicide,” Stanley said. “We’re still
waiting on confirmation from the coroner’s office. It is a child abuse
case.”

The Shawnee County Coroner’s Office is waiting on additional test results, a representative said Thursday.

Police need witnesses to help solve homicides

Arrests have been made in four of the 10 “murders” occurring in the capital city this year, and Topeka police are working toward solving other such cases.

“Obviously we want to have arrests in all of them,” police spokesman Capt. Brian Desch said.

But for that to happen, he said, witnesses need to come forward with information. Desch said some witnesses are reluctant to do so because they fear retaliation.

Others may not think the information they know is important enough to tell the police. But Desch said witnesses should let the police make that determination.

“We want to talk to anyone who has any sort of information,” he said. “We’d rather let the detectives know, and then they can decide whether it’s relevant or not.”
. . .

Desch said the other two homicides haven’t yet been classified. In the first, the death of Brian E. Andrews, 29, on Feb. 17, Desch said it may remain indefinite because there isn’t enough evidence to put it into any of those categories.

The second, that of 2-year-old Gabrielle E. Thompson on Aug. 2, Desch said he expected to be resolved. However, there isn’t a specific time frame for a decision to be made.
