Texas Police Search for Missing Girl Who May Have Wandered Away From Home in Her Sleep

Police are searching for a 10-year-old girl who disappeared Saturday night while visiting relatives in Carrollton, Texas.
Police believe Jasmen Gonzalez may have been sleepwalking and wandered out of the home.

Police are concerned because Gonzalez is
believed to be wearing only her pajamas, with no socks or shoes, and the
overnight low temperature in Dallas was 39 degrees.

"She doesn't know anyone," John Stovall of
the Carrollton Police Department told FoxNews.com. "She's been missing
for over 10 hours, it's concerning."

Police have set up a command post and are using a K-9 team and helicopters to search the area.
Gonzalez and her family live in Oklahoma City and were in Texas visiting relatives.

The body of a Hispanic female was found
Sunday during the search for a missing 10-year-old Texas girl, the
Dallas Morning News reported.


It was not immediately known if it was the
body of Jasmen Gonzalez, whom police believe may have wandered away from
a relative's home in her sleep.


Police have been searching for the
10-year-old girl who disappeared Saturday night while visiting relatives
in Carrollton, Texas. Police believe Gonzalez may have been
sleepwalking.


Police are concerned because Gonzalez is

The body of a Hispanic female was found
Sunday during the search for a missing 10-year-old Texas girl, the
Dallas Morning News reported.

Sunday afternoon, police towed a pickup that had been parked outside the apartment where the little girl had stayed.
Officers spent the day interviewing friends and family members.
Police say Jasmen and her parents, who live in Oklahoma City, were in Carrollton to visit relatives.
Investigators originally thought the girl may have wandered out of the home in her sleep and got lost or injured.
But they now say she was abducted.
Carrollton police, along with officers from
several other agencies, had been searching since midnight, when she was
reported missing.
Police and FBI agents went door-to-door in the apartment complex, and even to nearby homes.
"We was all sleeping and police came knocking on our door close to 2," said Stephen Royer, a neighbor. "At
about 3:55 they came back and knocked on the door again . They wanted to
search our apartment. We said, 'go ahead.'"
Gonzalez and her family live in Oklahoma City and were in Texas visiting relatives.

CARROLLTON, Texas (AP) — Police say a 10-year-old Oklahoma City girl apparently abducted while with her family visiting relatives in the Dallas area has been found dead.

Carrollton police say Jasmen Gonzalez was last seen Saturday night at an apartment complex. Her body was located Sunday afternoon several blocks away behind a residence.

Autopsy results were pending Monday.

Police initially said the girl may have wandered away from where the family was staying, but Lt. Doug Mitchell says police now believe the child was abducted. Mitchell says the killing is not believed to have been random.

He says investigators have examined an SUV and that a person of interest has been interviewed.

Police say no one has been arrested.

CARROLLTON -- The medical examiner has determined that Jasmen Gonzalez died from a stab wound to the chest.

Carrollton authorities said that they have detained a man in connection with the murder of the 10-year-old girl.

At a Monday news conference, police said Jose Sifuentes, 23, was named
as a “person of interest.” Sifuentes lives in Carrollton, but is not a
United States citizen. He is being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement.

Sifuentes is a family friend who was in the same apartment where
Jasmen was abducted on Saturday night. His vehicle has been searched,
but authorities will not disclose what was found.
“We’re still talking to other people,” said Carrollton police spokesman
Lt. Doug Mitchell. “We are re-interviewing folks, so there’s a lot more
work to be done.”

Search crews found the 10-year-old’s body behind a wall at a house on
the corner of Rosemon Avenue and Clint Street, two blocks from where she
had been taken. Police said the house and homeowners have no connection
to the crime.

Neighbors said the homeowners looked out the window to see the body at
the same time volunteer search crews from Denton spotted the body.

Neighbors said it is very dark at night and not well-lit.

Meanwhile, those who live in Walnut Creek Apartment complex, where the abduction happened, were especially upset.

One woman told News 8 she has not slept in two days. As a mom of a
seven-year-old, she is worried about her daughter's safety after 12
years of living at that same complex without any major incidents.

Police said they are convinced this was not a random crime.

The investigation continues with police issuing search warrants for two
addresses and three vehicles. The addresses include the apartment where
the abduction happened and the home of Sifuentes.

Police said Jasmen Gonzalez was in town with her family from Oklahoma
City. They were visiting relatives in Carrollton for a family reunion.
Police said one other family from Mexico was also in attendance when
Jasmen went missing.
Hundreds of police detectives, FBI agents, and volunteers from the
community searched for her until 3:30 p.m. Sunday, when volunteers from
Denton spotted her body up next to a home two blocks from where she'd
been abducted.

The ten-year-old Oklahoma City girl
who was abducted from her relative's home was stabbed to death and
sexually assaulted, according to police.

The Dallas County medical examiner's office said on Monday that Jasmen Gonzalez died of a single stab wound to the chest.

Police believe she was sexually assaulted as she was found with her pants and underwear pulled down and with no shirt on.

Her death has been ruled a homicide.

Carrollton police have detained family friend 23-year-old Jose Concepcion Sifuentes as a 'person of interest'.

Sifuentes was at a party at the relative's home on Saturday night, the last night Jasmen was seen.

He has not yet been named as an official suspect but is being held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Jasmen was last seen on Saturday night at an apartment complex around 11.45pm.

a man Tuesday with the murder of 10-year-old Jasmen Gonzalez, whose
body was found over the weekend.

Jose Consepcion Sifuentes, 23, was moved
from jail in Carrollton, Texas, where he was being kept on an
immigration hold, to Lew Sterrett Justice Center in downtown Dallas Tuesday morning.

He was questioned Monday as a person of
interest in the death of Jasmen, whose family lives in Oklahoma City and
was in Carrollton for a family reunion.

Sifuentes, described as a friend of Jasmen's
relatives, was charged with the girl's murder after incriminating
evidence was found in his vehicle and apartment.

According to a search warrant affidavit,
police retrieved a knife with a black handle, yellow rubber gloves,
hair, half of a golden charm, and samples of suspected human blood.

Tests were still being conducted Tuesday on the items recovered.

Jasmen's body was found shortly before 3:30 p.m. local time Sunday behind a house about four blocks from the
apartment building where she and her family were staying.

CARROLLTON — Mexican officials are now involved in the case of an
10-year-old girl who was murdered in Carrollton over the weekend.

The family of Jasmen Gonzalez attended a private candlelight vigil
Tuesday night near the spot where her body was found. The Mexican
Consulate is tying to help them arrange a funeral.

Earlier in the day, Jose Sifuentes, a relative of the dead girl, went from "person of interest" to accused killer.

"How do you fathom losing a 10-year-old child?" asked Carrollton police spokesman Lt. Doug Mitchell.

With Sifuentes now in jail, police now have another priority — helping the victim's family.

"There is an anonymous benefactor that's going to help with
transportation costs and other necessities," Mitchell said, adding the
police have also been in touch with Catholic Charities to see about
helping Jasmen's grandparents travel from Mexico to her funeral in
Oklahoma City.

The Mexican Consulate in Dallas told News 8 they are guiding the
Gonzalez family through the process of getting humanitarian visas for
relatives in Mexico.

Consulate staffers have also spoken to Jose Sifuentes, who is in the
U.S. illegally, officials said. The consulate is monitoring his case to
ensure his rights are upheld, but said they will not provide any other
help to him.

Sifuentes had been deported from the U.S. in the past. He had been in Carrollton for about a month.

"I see him two times, that's it... he's a new resident," said apartment manager Ruth Reyes.

Sifuente's common-law wife is the victim's cousin. They have a child.
On Tuesday, their apartment still held toys, but Reyes said most of
their belongings were packed into a moving truck overnight.

Sifuentes is charged with murder. A capital murder charge could come
later, after police determine whether the 10-year-old was sexually
assaulted.

"There are a lot of things that still have to be done... a lot of
evidence that still has to be analyzed," Lt. Mitchell said. "To my
knowledge, that determination has not been made."

Jasmen's family was waiting for her body to be released by the
medical examiner's office. They will then return to their home in
Oklahoma City for the funeral.

outside, but police soon dismissed that idea and believed she was
abducted.


Her body was found Sunday afternoon just four blocks from where she was staying at a relative's apartment.


Officials said she suffered a stab wound to the chest. Evidence also
suggests she was sexually assaulted, as the body was found with her
shirt off and her pants and underwear pulled down.


Sifuentes is from Mexico and has a child with his common-law wife, a cousin of the young victim, according to WFAA 8 News.


The illegal immigrant had been deported from the United States in the
past and is believed to have been back in this country for at least a
month, police said.


Mexican officials are aware of the case, but said they will not assist
Sifuentes beyond ensure his rights are upheld, WFAA 8 News reported.
