TAHLEQUAH —
Cherokee County prosecutors on Thursday filed charges against a Tahlequah mother accused of enabling child abuse by injury.

Samantha Laperche, 38, allegedly allowed her husband, Paul Laperche, to
excessively whip her 10-year-old son. An affidavit filed with the
charges indicates Paul Laperche has left Oklahoma, and court records
show he has not been charged with a crime in Cherokee County District
Court.

The affidavit states a school resource officer was contacted Oct. 25,
2011, by a school-based social worker. The child had “severe bruising”
on the legs, buttocks, and lower back area, and told school officials
his stepfather had beaten him with a belt.

The child told school officials he could not walk properly for some
time after the alleged beating, and said his stepfather had also slapped
him in the face several times, grabbed him by the back of the neck,
threw him on a bed and beat him.

The affidavit indicates Samantha Laperche and Paul Laperche both
admitted their involvement in the incident, and called it “discipline.”
The boy told school officials he’d been whipped before, but the October
incident was the most severe.

Samantha Laperche allegedly admitted to a Department of Human Services
worker that she had whipped her son after he’d been spanked by the
stepfather, and said she used a “willow switch.” He was also made to do
chores the rest of the night, and the boy told school officials that if
he slowed down, he would be struck with the switch.

Paul Laperche, according to the affidavit, admitted during an interview
with DHS he had spanked the boy with a belt. In an email sent from Paul
Laperche to the boy’s father, Laperche allegedly tried to convince the
boy’s father to assist in such discipline, telling him it was not too
late, and they could “do this together,” but that it was the father’s
choice.

The boy’s father has told authorities he fears for his child’s safety.
Other children also live in the home, according to the affidavit, and
made statements to authorities that seem to collaborate the victim’s
report.

A warrant was issued for Samantha Laperche’s arrest on Thursday.

Once again disiplin and abuse are a fine line. You may spank you child after they are old enought to understand what there being disiplined for. Dont whip, beat, punch, kick, and slap you children. you may think you have the right to beat your child with a belt let alone a willo switch. But you dont. Sorry not in this day and age when people have words with witch to talk. There are other ways to reinforce your actions.
