YORK – A woman charged with child abuse and neglect in the death of
her infant son is scheduled to appear in York-Poquoson Juvenile &
Domestic Relations Court Thursday for a preliminary hearing.
Sabrina Battad was originally arrested in November and charged with
first-degree murder in the death of her 9-month-old son. The charge was
later reduced to second degree murder and then withdrawn altogether.
Instead prosecutors filed a new charge of felony child abuse and neglect
against Battad. Paramedics were called to Battad's home on Burts Road on
Nov. 18 for an unresponsive child. The infant died a short time later at a local hospital.
At the time investigators said they suspected the infant may have died from injuries from being shaken.
During the hearing Wednesday a judge will determine whether
there is enough evidence to establish probable cause to certify the
charge to go before a grand jury.

YORK — A grand jury indicted a young woman Tuesday for the death of her infant son.

Sabrina Battad, 20, was indicted on a single count of child abuse, a low-level
felony. Battad was originally arrested last November on a charge of
first-degree murder, but prosecutors reduced it to second-degree before
withdrawing the charge altogether for a new charge of child abuse.

Battad’s 9-month-old son died Nov. 18. Paramedics were called to her home on Burts Road, but the boy died at a hospital.

During a preliminary hearing in March, deputy commonwealth attorney Donna Maw
said Battad has admitted shaking the baby before he died, but an autopsy
did not reveal injuries consistent with the infant being shaken. Battad
is supposed to stand trial June 28.
