Cops: Man left pit bull to babysit infant while he drank at bar
By NBCMiami.com

A Palm Coast, Fla., man has been arrested on suspicion he had his pit bull watch a 10-month-old baby while he went out to drink beer, authorities say.

James R. Irvine, 41, was arrested Saturday and faces one charge of child neglect, according to online jail records. He was held on $1,500 bond.

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies said Irvine's girlfriend left him in charge of her child while she was away at work. After not answering several of her calls that evening, Irvine eventually picked up and said, "I'm watching the game," according to an arrest form.

The woman said she found Irvine trying to get into the house and that he was urinating on himself, according to the report.

He admitted to his girlfriend that he had been having a few drinks, but told her the baby wasn't alone because their pet pit bull was watching it, deputies said.

A bar employee verified that she had served him five Coronas and one Bud Light.

The baby was found crying inside a room with the door shut and the pit bull was sitting outside of it, the report said.

At least the dog was outside the childs room. Still no one with a child under 8 should have a Pit Bull or Rottweiller. They are child killers. Too many children have been killed by these two breeds. A loving family dog still kills. Look at Regan and Kaitlyn. Their aunts dogs were loving family pets till they almost killed both girls. Besides the dog he just left the child alone. A child does not cry for nothing. It's for food, warmth, diaper, attention, whatever. There needs to be someone with a baby at ALL times. My mistake, not father just a POS boyfriend.

PALM COAST — A Palm Coast man is accused of leaving a pit bull to baby-sit for a 10-month-old while he went to a local bar, according to a Flagler County sheriff's report.

James R. Irvine, 41, was arrested and charged with child neglect at 12:30 a.m. Saturday after the child's mother reported that he left the infant alone while she was at work, the report states.

The mother, who is not named in the report, told deputies she left Irvine in charge of her son when she left for work on Nov. 30. She called several times before 11 p.m. with no answer, and the last time Irvine picked up the phone he told her "I'm watching the game" and hung up on her, according to the report.

The woman arrived home and found Irvine trying to get in the garage door, the report states. He eventually told her he had been "having a few drinks."

Irvine told her he had not "left the baby alone," according to the report, because the "pit bull was watching the baby."

The baby was in his bedroom with the door shut, the report states.

"The dog was sitting outside the room, and the baby was crying," a deputy reported.

The mother checked on the baby, who was "wet and clearly hadn't been changed in a while," according to the report. Other conditions in the house, like cats shut in a room and cat food put up on the counter, were as though everyone would be "out for long periods of time."

Irvine refused to open the door, but told deputies "he had been on the couch all day and night watching TV," according to the reports.
