OCALA, Fla. —


The Marion County Sheriff's Office is investigating an attempted murder-suicide Friday that left a child dead in Ocala.

Investigators said Melanie Reyes, 20, posted on Facebook that she was going to kill her 6-month-old child, Jona Mendoza.

Authorities said the grandmother and Jona’s father saw the post and called the sheriff's office, asking to do a well-being check on Reyes.

Officials said when deputies arrived at the home on NW 45^th Court, they found Reyes and Jona shot, but still alive.

Reyes and Jona were hospitalized, but Jona died a short time later, authorities said.

OCALA, Fla. —A woman is in critical condition and her son is dead after she fired shots in their home, according to officials.

Investigators say Melanie Reyes is still in the hospital Monday, in critical condition, after she attempted a murder-suicide in her Ocala home.

Reyes is accused of killing her 6-month-old son.

Officials found Reyes and the baby boy, Jonah Mendoza, in a back bedroom of the home they shared with the woman's parents on Friday.

Reyes shot the boy and then turned the gun on herself, according to investigators.

The boy was dead when officials arrived at the home.

A 6-month-old Florida boy died from gunshot wounds after his mother went on Facebook and wrote that she was going to shoot herself and the child.

Family members called 911 on Friday to report the post from 20-year-old Melanie Reyes, Fox 51 reported. When police arrived at her home in Ocala, they found Reyes and her son, Jonah Mendoza, with gunshot wounds.

No one else was found inside the home, and police recovered a handgun at the scene. Jonah died after being taken to a local hospital, while Reyes survived and is in critical condition, Fox 51 reported.

Reyes has been involved in an ongoing custody dispute with the boy's father, Jordan Mendoza, the Gainesville Sun reported.

A 20-year-old Marion County woman has died days after deputies say she shot and killed her 6-month-old baby and then shot herself.

Family members of Melanie Reyes said they ended her life support Tuesday after the Jan. 4 shooting that killed her child and left her in critical condition.

Deputies said Reyes posted on Facebook that she was going to shoot her baby, Jonah Mendoza and herself right before the shooting. Her family members saw the post and called 911.

When deputies got to her home, they forced their way inside and found both Reyes and the infant with gunshot wounds. The child was airlifted to a local hospital where he later died. Reyes was transported in critical condition and left on life support.

Two weeks ago on Dec. 20, deputies arrested Reyes for allegedly hitting her boyfriend with a baseball bat and charged her with aggravated domestic battery.

The report said she had been living with a man, who wasn’t the child's father, since before her son was born, but was in the process of moving out.

She was out on bail for assaulting her boyfriend when she murdered her baby. She had attacked and cut her boyfriend which is why she was out on bail to begin with. Not the father, the current man.

Of course, when you're out on bail you are not allowed to have guns in your possession. Not that laws mean anything to a woman who would murder he own baby.

She was also fighting the father in court to deny him visitation. She claimed he was violent. You can't get more violent than murdering your own baby.
