Shocking Video: Girl, 4, Attacked By Pit Bull In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A 4-year-old girl was attacked by a vicious pit bull in the Bronx this past weekend, in an incident that was captured on surveillance video.

The girl was walking with a woman on Webster Avenue Sunday, when the dog ran through the intersection and jumped on her.

Seconds later, a group of bystanders ran over to pull the dog off.

“At first the dog tried to bite her in the face, but he grabbed the jacket, he bit her on the leg,” said a witness, Eduardo Candeler. “He was trying to take it out but he was holding her.”

The girl was taken to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center. Her condition was not known Tuesday night.

Not many details at this moment. Don't know if this is a stray dog or one that got loose. At least she's alive right now. Dog behaviour is the responsibility of the owner. Pit Bulls are one breed however that should be exterminated. Beware watching the video. I cried seeing the little angel being hurt. William

Shocking footage shows the moment a young girl was set upon by a vicious pit bull in New York — only to be saved by passersby.

Surveillance cameras caught the dog's bloodthirsty attack, at 166th St. and Webster Ave. in the Bronx, on Sunday afternoon.

Video posted online shows the canine careering over and pouncing on the 6-year-old, who was walking with her mom.

With the dog's jaws locked onto her legs, a group of men sprint over and start stamping on the out of control beast.

Scaring the animal away, its owner is then seen shouting at the crowd to leave his dog alone as he puts him back on a leash.

Eduardo Candelier told NBC New York he "didn't think twice" about his own safety when rushing to help the girl.

"The first thing that went through my mind was that I had to help her. The girl was crying, she was going crazy," he added.

The girl was hospitalized and treated for minor injuries to her right arm and right leg, before being released.

The dog's owner stayed on the scene as cops arrived, and has been given a summons for not having his pet on a leash.
