Missing Cocoa Beach teen is found unhurt along State Road 528
Runaway is likely, sheriff's department says after discovery
Apr. 9, 2013 7:57 AM
More than 14 hours after she was reported missing Monday, a
14-year-old Cocoa Beach girl was found safe, police said, walking along
State Road 528 just west of Port Canaveral.
According to Maj. Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, a
sheriff’s agent found Jordan Taylor Fagan around 9:30 p.m., walking westbound.
Not long before that discovery, a citizen had reported seeing a girl who looked like Jordan near North Banana River Drive.
Goodyear said the girl was unhurt. Though the investigation is not yet complete,
Goodyear said the disappearance likely was a runaway case.
Jordan was taken directly to the Cocoa Beach Police Department, where she was reunited with her family late Monday.
It was day that started in harrowing fashion for the family and their neighborhood.
Jordan was last seen in her bedroom at the family home at 105 W. Park Lane
about 10 p.m. Sunday by her father, said Maj. Jay Harmon of the Cocoa
Beach police. When Jordan’s mother went to wake her for school at about
7:30 a.m., the girl was gone.
Police from Cocoa Beach, Rockledge and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office
blocked off Park Lane for hours Monday. A sheriff’s helicopter, as well
as police dogs, were brought in as part of the investigation.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office mobile command post, a semi-truck that
provides investigators a place to work on scene, was parked on West Park
Avenue throughout the day, only leaving after the girl was confirmed safe.
An intriguing clue, one that officers originally described as disturbing,
was a cut screen on Jordan’s bedroom window. Officials, though, said no
one at the home heard signs of a struggle.
Harmon said multiple sightings were reported, though by Monday afternoon none had been confirmed.
One person called and reported seeing a girl matching Jordan’s description walking on State Road 528 about 7 a.m. Monday.
No Amber Alert — a widespread, multi-media advisory on a missing child —
was issued on Monday. At the time, Harmon said police were still trying
to determine whether a crime had taken place.
Residents said the heightened police activity was an unusual presence in the area.
“This is just so weird,” said Patti Lowery, who has lived nearby for 45
years. “I’ve lived here forever, on the next street, and you just don’t
see things like this.”
The idea that someone could have taken the girl against her will was frightening.
“I mean, if somebody’s going in and snatching a child out of her bed at
night, of course we’re worried about it,” Roxanne Rauli said. “It’s a
good neighborhood. It’s a real good neighborhood.”
