Sex predator gets 10 years-to-life for abusing daughter of woman he met online while on probation

PARKER, Colo. - A convicted sex offender, who prosecutors say met a woman online so he could sexually assault her 10-year-old daughter, has been sentenced to 10 years-to-life in prison by a Douglas County judge.

Jose Nael McCarthy-Dawson, 33, was a registered sex offender on probation for a prior sexual assault on a child when he sexually abused the new victim in his Parker home, said Lisa Pinto, spokeswoman for the Douglas County District Attorney's Office.

He was sentenced Tuesday to prison after being convicted on sex assault on a child by a person in position of trust.

McCarthy-Dawson pleaded guilty in 2005 to sexually touching a child and was sentenced to lifetime probation, Pinto said.

Unbeknownst to his probation officer, McCarthy was trolling the Internet looking for a new victim, Pinto said. He started an online relationship on the social-media website Airg.com with an woman and asked her if she had children. He began dating the woman and then sexually assaulted her 10-year-old daughter.

"Perverts online start working their way into your home the second you decide to friend them," District Attorney George Brauchler said. "Dawson deserves a lifetime of prison where his social media access will be limited to the felons he meets in the cafeteria."
"If ever there was a chance for someone to receive a life sentence, on a case like this, this is that case," Judge Paul King said before handing down the sentence.

Prosecutors say this case illustrates the inherent danger of taking a stranger you meet online into your home with your children.

McCarthy-Dawson "told the victim that she must not tell her mother about his assault," Pinto said.

But the girl told her mother what McCarthy-Dawson had done, and the mother called the Parker Police Department, which led to his immediate arrest and prosecution.

The case against McCarthy-Dawson was investigated and built by Detective Penny McClean of the Parker Police Department. Senior Deputy District Attorney Chris Gallo prosecuted the case on behalf of the Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
