JACKSON, MS (WLOX) -

The Mississippi Highway Patrol has issued an Amber Alert for a 17-year-old girl they say was shot and abducted Sunday morning from a home in Jackson.

Katelyn Beard, 17, was taken from 4244 Lynda Street in Jackson between 6am and 7am Sunday morning. She's described as a white female with long brown hair, brown eyes, 5'4" tall, and weighing 140 pounds.

Police said Beard is seriously injured and is in need of medical attention.

She was last seen with Dewayne Thompson, 19, who is described as a black male with black hair, brown eyes, 5'9" tall and weighing 135 pounds.

Jackson Police believe Thompson shot Beard, fled the scene and has Beard with him. Evidence inside the home led them to that conclusion.

They were last seen traveling in a gray or silver 2009 Nissan Altima with Greene County license plate GRF 293. They were traveling east on Lynda Street in Jackson.

Thompson is wanted for the charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping and auto theft. Authorities said Thompson should be considered armed and dangerous.

Car involved in Mississippi teen Amber Alert found

JACKSON, Miss. — An Amber Alert continues for 17-year-old Katelyen Beard.

Beard was abducted Sunday morning at 4244 Lynda Street in Jackson, Mississippi.

She was last seen with Dewayne Thompson and traveling in a green 2009 Green Nissan Altima with Greene County license plate GRF 293.

That car was found Monday morning in Jackson, Mississippi.

Police in Jackson say there was a shooting and blood was found, leading them to believe Katelyn has been injured.

Update: Jackson police arrest suspect, teen girl still missing

Jackson Police Department spokeswoman Colendula Green confirmed that Dewayne Thompson wanted in the wounding and kidnapping of Katelyn Beard, 17, is in custody.

Thompson was arrested around 5:45 p.m. in west Jackson near where Beard's vehicle was found earlier today. Beard has not been found.

Green said an officer was on routine patrol around 9:40 a.m. when he found Beard's Nissan Altima abandoned behind the building on Dutchman Row.

Green said JPD has towed the vehicle in order to process it for evidence.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert on Sunday night about 9:30 p.m. for Beard.

Beard was taken from her home at 4244 Lynda St. between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., according to a news release from MHP.

JPD responded to a report of a shooting at that address. Evidence that some one had been wounded was found at the scene.

She is described as a white female with long brown hair, brown eyes, 5-foot-4 and 140 pounds.

JACKSON, Miss. - Authorities have found the body of 17-year-old Katelyn Beard.
Katelyn was found on Darden Road Tuesday morning. 
The suspect, Dewayne Thompson was arrested Monday in the same area where Katelyn's car was found.

Thompson is accused of shooting Katelyn and kidnapping her. Thompson has been in a JPD police cruiser all morning communicating with officers on the scene.

Dewayne Thompson was captured Monday around 5:45 p.m., police said.

Katelyn Beard's family releases statement about her death

Katelyn Beard's body was found Tuesday before noon, off of Darden road, near the scene of a morning search.
The coroner said her body had been dumped for at least two days, and she was shot in the head.
Her family has issued a statement about their loss:
Katelyn was loved by all who knew her including her mother, father, five brothers, and two sisters. Her grandmother, her great-grandfather, her uncle and aunt will miss her even more along with so many others. 
 At this time we have just as many questions as we do answers. 
The devastation we feel about the loss of Katelyn and the events that have unfolded the past few days are unparalleled by anything we have been through before. 
 We want to thank whoever called in and reported the initial incident along with the person who called with DeWayne Thompson's whereabouts because without them we would not have found the peace of knowing where she (Katelyn) is. 
We have been extremely impressed with the Jackson Police department handling and response to this situation. We find peace knowing she is with her Heavenly Father and will be deeply missed. .....

No bond for man charged in girl's slaying

JACKSON, Miss. —Bond was denied Tuesday for Dewayne Thompson, who is charged with capital murder in the death of 17-year-old Katelyn Beard.

Thompson led police to Beard's body, which was found about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in a wooded area off Darden Road, near Pocahontas, said Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance.

Beard had been shot in the head and her body dumped, Vance said.

"She was just laid out on the side of the road on the other side of that fence," said Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart.

Beard's body wasn't hidden or covered, Grisham-Stewart said.

Earlier in the morning Tuesday, search crews found clothing belonging to Beard, police said.

Timeline: Amber Alert issued Sunday 

"You know, this young woman was 17 years old. The individual who committed this crime is about 19 years old, so again, two lives destroyed for nothing," Vance said. "It appears to be another act of senseless violence steeped in drug abuse."

The Mississippi Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert later in the day for Beard.  

The car was found Monday morning, less than a mile from where Beard was reportedly taken. Thompson was arrested nearby, hours after the car was recovered, police said.

Police said they found blood and other evidence inside the car before taking it to the state crime lab.

"The motive is unclear. The only thing that he has indicated is that they were consuming drugs together. But as to specifically why he committed this murder, he hasn't told us that," Vance said.

Investigators said Thompson told them he and Beard were on a drug binge that began Friday, but Thompson claims he doesn't recall all of what happened.
