"Jane" KASSERIS - 11 yo - Killingly CT

A Connecticut woman is facing charges after she left her 11-year-old daughter home alone while she went on a trip to Florida.


Michelle Kasseris, 33, of Killingly, Conn., initially
told police her father died and she couldn't afford to take the girl
with her.

Police believe she was in Florida with her boyfriend.

Kasseris was arraigned Tuesday in Danielson Superior Court on a charge
of risk of injury to a minor. Bail was set at $25,000. The girl is now
staying with her father in New York.
A parent whose child is a
friend of the girl’s alerted school officials to the situation last
week after the girl told his son her mother left for Florida to meet
her boyfriend.
A police officer and social
worker then visited the girl who first told them her mother had gone
shopping, but eventually admitted her mother was in Florida.
Police then called Kasseris
in Florida. They claim she didn’t see what the problem was since the
girl could go to a neighbor if she needed anything.
According to police, this
wasn't the first time the girl was left alone. Neighbors and friends
say she frequently would go away with her boyfriend for the weekend,
leaving the girl at home.

police said they were contacted by officials at Killingly Intermediate
School on Feb. 17 that an 11-year-old student was absent without an
excuse.Troopers went to the girl's home and said they found her home alone.The
girl's mother, identified as Michelle Kasseris, went to Florida,
leaving the girl alone, police said. Police said they spoke with
Kasseris by phone and said she did not plan to return until Feb. 19.
Kasseris told police she went to Florida for a funeral and to visit her
boyfriend.The Department of Children and Families was contacted and the girl is now with her father in New York.Kasseris
was arrested at her Killingly home on Monday. She was charged with risk
of injury to a minor and her bond was set at $50,000.Court
documents suggest Kasseris has been leaving the child alone for several
years. According to the documents, Kasseris would leave on the weekend,
and not return for days.The only food that was left for the child were ice cream and cookies.A
neighbor's son revealed the 11-year-old girl was by herself and her
mother was in Florida with her boyfriend, not planning a funeral for
her father like she had said.The neighbor alerted school
authorities who intervened because the unidentified girl was absent
from school. Officials contacted police who in turn called Kasseris who
told them she was in Tampa and would return on Friday.
