Oxford police are searching for a 14-year-old who they say went missing
over the weekend.

Timothy "Jacob" Mitchell left his house between
11 p.m. Friday and 7:30 Saturday morning, according to his mother, Amy
Mitchell. She lives on the 2000 block of Peek Drive.

The boy is
5-feet, 10-inches tall, and weighs 170 pounds, police Investigator Roger
Phillips said. He has blue eyes, and his hair was brown when he was
last seen.

Amy Mitchell believes her son met someone on the
social networking Web site MySpace, and ran away with that person. She
said all of his belongings were taken from his room. Phillips said
police have followed a few leads, but none yet have led to finding Jacob
Mitchell.

Amy Mitchell said she last heard from her son Sunday,
when she received a text message from him.

Phillips asked that
anyone with information on Jacob Mitchell's whereabouts contact police
at 256-831-3121.

A teenage boy who went missing from his mother’s home in Oxford more
than a week ago returned home safely this morning.

Timothy “Jacob” Mitchell, 14, left his house between 11 p.m. April 9 and 7:30
a.m. the next morning, according to his mother, Amy Mitchell. She said
she believed her son had runaway with someone he met on the online
social networking site MySpace.

Jacob Mitchell was in Scottsboro
today when he contacted his mother and an uncle who lives in Scottsboro,
said Oxford police Lt. L.G. Owens. Scottsboro police released him into
his uncle’s custody. Attempts to contact a Scottsboro police lieutenant
overseeing the case were unsuccessful today.

After he arrived back in Oxford, investigators interviewed Mitchell to determine his
well-being.

“He was in good health,” Owens said. “It was a relief to his mother and his family to have him back.”

Mitchell’s mother was right — he was with a 16-year-old boy whom he had had met on
MySpace. Owens said the other boy was not charged.

“As far as we know, he’s been (in Scottsboro) the whole time, and hasn’t been in any
danger,” he said.

Owens said this case luckily had a happy ending, but parents must be sure they are aware of their children’s
activities on the Internet.

“It is imperative that you watch what your children are doing on these social networking sites, because there
are people out there who want to harm your kids,” he said.
