Chattanooga police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy
who was brought to T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital at 5 a.m. today.

The boy was brought to the hospital by his father’s girlfriend on
complaint that he was having difficulties breathing, said Sgt. Jerri
Weary, a Chattanooga Police Department spokeswoman. After medical staff
examined the boy, they found signs of abuse and determined he was
deceased, Sgt. Weary said.

Police are speaking with the woman who brought the boy in to retrace
the events that led up to the boy’s death, Sgt. Weary said.
Investigators also are trying to locate next of kin, she said.

What happened to a 3-year-old boy who died over the weekend?
That's the question detectives are asking today, as they continue to
look for the little boy's father.
According to Chattanooga Police, at this point this is still a death
investigation. No one's been charged, but there are some things that
just don't add up, and detectives are hoping the father can do some
explaining.
At T.C. Thompson over the weekend a woman brought her boyfriend's son
to the hospital. The 3-year-old was having trouble breathing. A short
time later, the hospital notified Chattanooga Police that the child had
died.
Doctors found bruises on the boy that didn't add up.
"There were things that just didn't look right, there were
questionable marks," Lieutenant Kim Noorbergen says.
According to Noorbergen, the boy had been in his father's custody,
but his girlfriend was the only one to be found. Detectives tell us it
took more than 24 hours to find and notify the boy's mother, but they
still can't find the father. He has not been named a suspect, but the
fact that it took so long to find one parent and the other is still
missing in action, puts detectives in unfamiliar territory.
"Most people you think, if something happens to your child, they're
there immediately; if not, they're on the way," Noorbergen says. "This
is tough for us, because not only are we investigating the death of this
child, we've now had to take time to find the parents of this child."
At the Hamilton County Forensic Center, we found detectives waiting
to find out what killed the boy; a report that's still not ready. But if
there was the abuse doctors suspect the next question becomes, at whose
hands?
"We're dealing with a child here, a 3 year old child, and that's
heart wrenching to begin with. But when you have the added stress of the
investigation of trying to locate a parent of a child that's terrible,"
Noorbergen says.

The child has been identified as Jaylan Ramsey. Ramsey died of
blunt-force abdominal trauma. The incident is being investigated as
homicide.

Autopsy Says 3-Year-Old Boy
Died Of Blunt Trauma All Over His Body

An autopsy says a three-year-old boy who was
brought dead to Children's Hospital on Saturday died of "multiple
blunt trauma." The report from the medical examiner's office said
Jaylen James Ramsey had bruises all over his body from the top of
his head to his toes.
The probable cause of death was listed as "bowel perforation due to
blunt force abdominal trauma." There
were numerous bruises and scars on the feet, legs, stomach, arms,
buttocks, back and head.
The child, who lived at 4114 10th Ave., was brought to the hospital by
private vehicle. He was brought in by his father's girlfriend, who said
he was complaining of stomach pain and gasping for air.
Medical personnel found that the child was dead.
Police have since interviewed the child's mother.
Jaylen weighed 39 pounds and was 3'3" tall.

Father Of Boy Who Was Beaten To Death Is Apprehended

A man wanted for questioning in connection with the investigation of the beating death of his three-year-old son has been captured.

Reginald Tumlin, 31, was arrested at 406 Sequoia Dr. early Tuesday morning by Chattanooga Police and the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

He was taken into custody on six Criminal Court probation violations.

The boy was brought into T.C. Thompson’s Children’s Hospital unresponsive on May 1. Tumlin’s girlfriend, who brought the child to the hospital, told medical staff that the child was having problems breathing, but doctors discovered the child had died.
A medical examiner’s report later determined the child died of blunt force trauma. The investigation into the child’s death is still on-going.

Tumlin was taken into custody without incident just before 7 a.m. after being located in a bedroom at his uncle’s house. His charges stem from probation violations on multiple counts of possession of cocaine for resale, possession of marijuana for resale, possession of contraband and paraphernalia, theft, criminal impersonation and other charges.

Tumlin was questioned by major crimes investigators, then transported to the Hamilton County Jail.

The state continues presentation of its murder case against a Chattanooga man in the death of his 3-year-old son.
Reginald Tumlin is being tried on charges of felony murder, aggravated child abuse and neglect.

) reported trial began Tuesday with prosecutors showing jurors images
of the injuries to Jaylen Ramsey's body. There were cuts, bruises and a
burn mark.

Court records show Tumlin's girlfriend drove
the boy to a hospital on May 1, 2010, saying the child was gasping for
air and had stomach pain.

A coroner later determined Jaylen likely died of a perforated bowel caused by blunt force trauma to the abdomen.

Defense attorney Dan Ripper told jurors the state lacked proof that his client harmed the boy.

I hope Jaylen receives justice. How can a parent do this to their own child. Drugs probably had something to do with it. I hope the monster is put away for a long time.

A jury found Reginald Tumlin guilty of two counts of child abuse, one
count of criminally negligent homicide and aggravated child neglect in
connection with the death of his 3-year-old son.


Tumlin, 32, faces a maximum of 60 years in prison. His sentencing date is Aug. 27.


An autopsy showed more than Jaylen Ramsey suffered more than 50
bruises on various parts of his face and body, numerous lacerations, a
healing burn on the back of his left thigh and bleeding on the brain,
lungs and kidneys.

Great news! I hope Tumlin gets the full 60 years with no parole. We'll find out in August.

What was the part the girlfriend played in all of this? Did she take hte kid to the hospital while her bf ran and hid from his drug charges? DId she help out, or at least watch the abuse and do nothing?
