Listen Up; A Child is Missing Empty Listen Up; A Child is Missing

Does your area avail itself of this FREE service? Perhaps you could be an advocate and push for its use in your area....

Every 40 seconds a child goes missing. It’s a parent’s worst nightmare
and can become a community tragedy. Now, the Penn Township Police
Department in Lancaster County is stepping up protection by using a
high-tech tool to reach 1,000 people a minute.

It’s called “A Child is Missing”. It’s run by a non-profit group out of Fort
Lauderdale, Florida. It’s funded through grants.

Its name is misleading. It’s not just for missing children. The telephone alert
system can be used for anyone in the community that goes astray.

“I feel that we, as police officers, have an obligation to bring people
home safely,” says Officer Tod Neifert with the Penn Township Police Department.

Penn Township police recently registered for the program. It’s free for police departments.

Officer Neifert says that when a person goes missing, his police department will call the
organization with a description of the missing person. Within 15
minutes, people who live in the area will be notified by phone through
an automated telephone message system.

“They take that location [where the person was last seen] using mapping in Florida and actually
draw a circle around the area we believe that person would’ve been able to cover,” explains Neifert.

The automated voice will give the resident a description of the missing person, explain where he was last
seen, what he was wearing and what car he was driving in. The
pre-recorded message asks residents to please help police by walking
outside and looking for the missing individual.

The system makes one-thousand calls a minute in the target area.

“It’s quick. It allows us to get the word out there quickly,” says Neifert.

The system will only call public phone numbers. If you only have a cell
phone or if your phone number is private, police ask you to please sign
up online and register your number, so you, too, can receive the
emergency alert. Police say you will only be contacted in the event of an emergency.
