An Amber Alert was issued this afternoon for a 38-year-old registered
sex offender who allegedly abducted his 8-year-old son from Burlington
County earlier in the day.

Terry Dusseault took the child from the 300 block of Canal Circle in Lumberton Township,
according to New Jersey State Police.

The suspect is also wanted on six charges of for crimes committed
against children in New Jersey, authorities said. Dusseault was
convicted in North Carolina of third-degree child exploitation charges
in 2007, was sentenced to probation and was listed on that state’s sex
offender registry, according to information on the North Carolina
Department of Justice website and the North Carolina Department of
Correction Offender Public Information website.

State Police said Dusseault took his 8-year-old son, Terry Dusseault, around 11 a.m. from a home in Lumberton.

New Jersey State Police issued an Amber Alert on Tuesday for an
8-year-old Burlington County boy who disappeared with his father shortly
before the man was to be arrested on sexual-assault charges.
The boy lived with his father, Terry Dusseault, a registered sex
offender in North Carolina, and Dusseault's brother on the 300 block of
Canal Circle in Lumberton, authorities said.
Authorities went to Dusseault's home Tuesday morning to arrest him on
sexual-assault charges involving three Burlington County juveniles,
said Joel Bewley, a spokesman with the County Prosecutor's Office. But
Dusseault and his son, Terry Jr., were gone before authorities arrived
around 11 a.m., Bewley said.
Dusseault, 38, was driving a black 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe with New
Jersey plates LXB-61U, according to officials. The alert was still on as
of 8:10 AM Wednesday.
Authorities say they think Dusseault and his son are alone.
The child's mother is dead, officials said.
His brother told authorities he was concerned about Dusseault's
mental status, Bewley said. Police issued the electronic alert around 2:30 p.m., Bewley said.
Terry Jr. is white, 4-foot-8, and weighs 80 pounds.
He has brown hair and brown eyes, like his father, authorities said.
The older Dusseault was last seen wearing a tan short-sleeve shirt
and khaki shorts. He is 5-foot-10 and weighs 210 pounds, officials said.
Dusseault has an "NY" tattoo on his left arm and a tattoo on his upper
chest that reads "Schaney," authorities said.
North Carolina records show that in 2007, Dusseault was convicted in the state for possession of child pornography.
Dusseault is charged in Burlington County with two counts of
first-degree aggravated sexual assault and five counts of endangering
the welfare of a child, Bewley said. Dusseault's son was not one of the
alleged victims, Bewley said. The relationship between Dusseault and the
three local juveniles is unclear.
"He was investigated based on a complaint of abuse," Bewley said.
Tuesday's Amber Alert fell under new guidelines in New Jersey for
cases involving children believed to have been abducted by relatives.
The system had generally excluded such situations, to prevent misuse in
custody disputes. Though authorities had been allowed to consider
factors such as domestic problems in deciding whether to issue an alert,
some officials were unaware of that, authorities said.
The guidelines were revised in April to end confusion about alerts
involving family members. State police now can issue the electronic
broadcast alerts if there is reason to believe an abducted child may be harmed or killed.
Authorities were criticized in February when the system was not
activated after an Atlantic County man snatched his 3-month-old daughter
from her grandmother in East Orange.
The father, Shamsiddin Abdur-Raheem, threw the baby off a Garden
State Parkway bridge into the Raritan River near Sayreville, according
to police. He then fled to his parents' home in Winslow Township. The
baby's body was later found. The father has been charged with kidnapping and murder.
Police ask anyone with information regarding Tuesday's Amber Alert to call 911.

Terry Dusseault, Jr.,
the 8-year-old boy who was abducted by his father, Terry Dusseault,
Sr. early Tuesday was found, unharmed, at the Medford Township ShopRite.
The child was taken from the home in Lumberton, N.J. that he shares with his dad, a registered sex offender, and an Amber Alert was issued Tuesday afternoon.
The suspect and his son were apprehended when a concerned citizen spotted their vehicle and alerted authorities.
Dusseault, Sr. is now in the custody of Medford Township Police. The 38-year-old father was charged with sexually assaulting three
children Tuesday before he took Terry, Jr. from their home, according to
police.
Officals say that although there was no evidence to suggest that
Dusseault ever molested his son, the Amber Alert was issued over concern
for the father's mental state. That alert has since been cancelled.

A convicted sex offender whose disappearance triggered an Amber Alert appeared in court on Thursday.
Police were looking for 38-year-old Terry Dusseault to arrest him on
child sexual assault and endangerment charges but he took off with his
8-year-old son. Now that the boy is safe, Dusseault had to answer the latest sex crime allegations against him. Dusseault appeared on video from the Burlington County jail. It was
his first court appearance since been arrested on Wednesday.
He is charged with sexually assaulting three young girls, and faces two
counts of aggravated sexual assault and five counts of endangering the
welfare of a child. Bail was set at $300,000 cash and
restraining orders were signed to keep him away from his alleged victims
should he make bail. The crimes allegedly took place last year beginning around April.
Sources say the victims were around nine years old. If he is to see his son, it will be under the supervision of the Department of Youth and Family Services. Dusseault fled with his son on Tuesday, activating the Amber Alert.
Authorities say he knew he was about to be charged, and that's why he
took off. The alert was canceled on Wednesday when an alert
motorist spotted the vehicle Dusseault was in on Route 70 and called
police. Dusseault's son was found unharmed. So far, Dusseault has not been charged for fleeing with his son, of whom he has custody. Dusseault was employed as a pizza delivery driver, and is a registered
sex offender as a result of a child porn conviction in North Carolina.

Lumberton man rejects plea deal in sex assault case

Posted: Tuesday, August 2, 2011
TERRY DUSSEAULT Jr - 8 yo - Lumberton (SW of Trenton) NJ 4e37d610
MOUNT HOLLY — A Lumberton man charged with multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child rejected a plea deal Monday in Superior Court that would have sent him to prison for 10 years.
Terry Dusseault Jr., 39, was arrested last August after leaving his Canal Circle apartment with his then-8-year-old son, triggering a national Amber Alert for the boy when authorities feared for his safety because of concerns about the defendant’s mental state.
Dusseault fled with the child when he learned charges were pending against him, authorities said. The missing-child alert ended a day later when he and his son were located unharmed in Medford.
Dusseault has been in custody since and has pleaded not guilty to a 19-count indictment that was returned by a Burlington County grand jury in March.
He was indicted on two first-degree counts of aggravated sexual assault, three counts of sexual assault, 11 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, two counts of terroristic threats, and a count of tampering with a witness.
Prosecutors have said the assaults occurred in Pemberton Borough between April and December 2009 and involved children under age 13.
In court Monday, Burlington County Assistant Prosecutor Michael Mormando said a plea deal calling for 10 years in prison had been offered when there was talk of resolving the case without going to trial.
The offer was rejected Monday and is now off the table, Mormando said.
He said as more time goes by and more resources are expended, any negotiated plea will include more prison time. If convicted, the defendant would have to serve 85 percent of any sentence he received, authorities said.
Dusseault’s court-appointed attorney, Bonnie Geller-Gorman, said she is waiting for a tape and transcript of a new interview that authorities conducted with one of the suspected victims.
Mormando said the victim “discloses and corroborates” statements of others involved in the case.
Geller-Gorman said that statement is “completely inconsistent” with the child’s original statement.
Dusseault remains in Burlington County Jail. Superior Court Judge Jeanne T. Covert ordered him back to court Aug. 22.
North Carolina Department of Corrections records show Dusseault was convicted of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor in 2007 for possessing child pornography. He was sentenced to probation.
That same year, he and his son moved from North Carolina to his mother’s home in the Maple Grove Estates development in Lumberton. In October, they moved into an apartment on Canal Circle in the Lumberton Apartments, where they lived with Dusseault’s brother.
