Young baby dies after being left alone, police say

PARKIN, AR (WMC-TV) - Police in Parkin have arrested an 18-year-old on charges of manslaughter after the death of her six-month old child.

According to police, the baby was one of several children left alone recently by their mother, Rita Scott. But the father of the baby that died, Ivan Wooten, said Scott would not have left her children alone.

"She ain't that type of person," he said.

Parkin Police Chief Dean Davidson disagrees.

"She went out partying and left her child, and there wasn't an adult designated to watch the child," Davidson said Monday.

He added that Scott's two other children, ages one and two, were also in the house, as well as two other young cousins.

Scott's brother, Jeremy, said his sister did not intend to leave her children alone.

"She paid my Aunt Tamika and Momma to watch the kids, so therefore they should have been up in there watching the kids," he said.

Jeremy Scott said he saw his sister pay the women $60. Investigators say the baby was discovered by relatives on an adult bed, even though a crib was right next to it.

"I believe the child got its head between the mattress and the wall," he said.

But police investigators believe the six-week-old's body was moved.

"When the baby was found, the baby was on its back," he said.

According to Davidson, there was no food in the house. But the mother of the six-week-old had $110 in her pocked when she arrived back at her house, after relatives texted her to say her son was dead.

Monday, Rita Scott was behind bars at the Cross County Jail, charged with manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a minor.

"This might turn from manslaughter case possibly to something higher," Davidson said.
