LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A 9-year-old Los Angeles boy has been reunited with his family Saturday after he was reported missing in a possible kidnapping on Friday night.

According to police, the boy, who is autistic, got into an argument with his mother and left his house on a scooter to a nearby gas station on the corner of Buckingham Road and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

A passerby noticed the boy and reported him as a possible found child to police. The boy was described as wearing checkered boxer shorts with a towel wrapped around his waist.

While on the phone with dispatch, the passerby saw the child get into a red Ford Mustang. Around the same time that evening, the boy's parents called the police and reported their son missing.

Police treated the situation as a possible kidnapping and searched throughout the night.

Around 11:45 a.m. Saturday, police located the Mustang and conducted a traffic stop. Authorities found the boy in good condition.

The driver, an African-American male, was taken into custody. The investigation is currently ongoing. Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the LAPD South West Division at (213) 485-2582.

Missing Los Angeles 9-year-old autistic boy found, but may have been victim of kidnapping

Police initially reported the boy had been found by a good Samaritan and reunited with his family, but further investigation indicated the child may have been kidnapped at the gas station.

A 9-year-old autistic boy who went missing late Friday night and was found later today was apparently kidnapped at a gas station, and not located by a good Samaritan as police initially reported.
The child went missing around 11:30 p.m. Friday from his home and was last seen at the Valero gas station, near the corner of Buckingham Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, said Officer Cleon Joseph of the Los Angeles Police Department.

“The boy was having an argument with his mother and left the home immediately after,” Joseph said. “The child, who was autistic, apparently rode his scooter to a nearby gas station.”

Joseph said a passerby called police and reported the boy as a “possible found child” because of the late hour and the way he was dressed.

While on the phone with a dispatcher the caller said the child was getting into a newer red Ford Mustang that drove away shortly after. The boy’s parents called police and reported him missing around the same time.

Police initially reported the boy had been found by a good Samaritan and reunited with his family, but further investigation indicated the child may have been kidnapped at the gas station.

“This morning at about 11:45 a.m., Southwest officers observed the suspected car,” Joseph said. “The officers conducted a traffic stop and found the boy in good condition.”

The driver, described only as a black male, was taken into custody for questioning, Joseph said.
An investigation continued late today.
