Eilzabeth (Beth) was last seen 1/5/11. Beth was babysitting the night of 1/4/11 and last spoke with her mom about 8pm. She was dropped off out side her home about 1:30am 1/5/11. The family that dropped her off realized Beth had left her purse in the car so the family brought it back to the house about 10-15 mins later. That is when it was discovered that Beth never made it into the house. Beth is 15 y/o and is currently on medication for a mood disorder. Beth did not have her cell phone, her purse, no clothes were missing from her room and she was not wearing a heavy coat that evening. Beth has been with out her medication since 1/4/11. Her famliy filed a police report on 1/5/11 and has attempted to communicate with the local police dept daily. Posters have been circulated and Text messages sent as well as many postings on family and friends facebook accounts. Facebook has created a page Find Elizabeth Ennen-Missing in Texas, Every time the family has contacted the local media they were advised that the local police dept has to release it first. Beth's mom has contacted The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children site and filed a report there. The local media just pick up Beth's story on 1/17/11 and another channel ran an interview with Beth's mom and aunt on 1/18/11. Very little media coverage has been allowed or offered.
Beth as been listed as an Endangered Runaway and it seems that because she is classified as a "Runaway", little attention is being paid to a missing girl. Currently the news is covering Hailey Dunn (Colorado City about 1 1/2 hours south/east of Lubbock) and she was also classified as a "Runaway" as well as a young girl a few years ago Joanna Rogers (Lubbock) who was also classified as a runaway. TIme is being wasted and is to precious for us to continue to sit back and do the very minimum because of how these girls are classified...MISSING IS MISSING. Beth's Family still has more questions than anwers...WE JUST WANT HER HOME. ITS BEEN WAY TOO LONG.

Lubbock Mom Begs for Help Searching for"Endangered" Runaway
Reported by: Stephanie Berzinski
15-year-old Elizabeth Ennen went missing January 5th, 2011. Ennen was babysitting for close family friends at the Carriage House Motel that night. She was then dropped off by those friends at her home near 42nd and Avenue L at 1:30 in the morning. We're told she left her purse inside the car so the family went to return it to her, only to find out she never went inside her home. Ennen is also without her medication for a mental disorder. Her family fears the worst and they said not much has been done by authorities to help find their teenage daughter.
"There's times I do and times I don't," said Virginia Ennen, Elizabeth's mother. "Some of the time I feel like it was just being pushed to the side because they classified her as a runaway."
"You know a 15 year old girl, no purse, no cell phone, no clothes, she wasn't even wearing a heavy coat why aren't we looking harder?" asked Mary, Elizabeth's aunt.
If you know anything about Elizabeth Ennen's where abouts please call the Lubbock Police Department at 775-2873.

Re: ELIZABETH ENNEN - 15 yo (2011)/ Convicted: Humberto Salinas, Jr. - Lubbock TX
Was anyone else at the house when she was dropped home? If no one was or they didn't hear her knocking and she found herself locked out without phone or money at 1.30am she most likely decided to knock on a neighbors door or if she had a friend living nearby she could have decided to walk to their house. I hope LE have gone house to house in her neighborhood and done a thorough search of them. It was odd there was no sign of her on'y 15 minutes later so she may have already been inside a neighbors house by then. Or if she was walking to a friends she must have been picked up by a car. I can't imagine she decided to run away on the spur of the moment at 1.30 am. Obviously LE have her phone and would know if she had arranged to meet someone or go somewhere.

Elizabeth Ennen 'Endangered': Police investigating another missing Texas teen
snipped.....
Elizabeth babysat the children at the Carriage House Motel where her boyfriend's family was living at the time, he said. The Carriage House Motel is located just off Hwy 27 and the 289 Loop.
After babysitting, Elizabeth was dropped off in front of her home late at night, around 1:30 a.m. Her home is located near the corner of 42nd and Avenue L, about seven miles north of the motel.
Elizabeth reportedly forgot her purse in the car. When the people she babysat for noticed the purse, they went to return it to her.
That’s when they learned Elizabeth never made it inside her house, and she was reported missing shortly after by her mother, Virginia Ennen. Police classified her case a "runaway."
The Center of Missing and Exploited Children have listed Elizabeth as an "endangered runaway" on their website.
Elizabeth vanished without her purse, cell phone, medication, coat, or any of her personal items. It was reported temperatures dipped into the high 20s in Lubbock that night

A Lubbock man was charged with kidnapping a 15-year-old girl who was for weeks listed as a runaway, Lubbock police announced Saturday.
Authorities Saturday were searching for Elizabeth Ennen, 15, after they believe she was kidnapped Jan. 5 during a baby-sitting job at the Carriage House motel in Southeast Lubbock, said Lubbock police Capt. Greg Stevens.
Ennen is described as white, about 5 feet, 3 inches tall, about 135 pounds with sandy blonde hair and brown eyes.
Police late Friday arrested 45-year-old Humberto Maldonado Salinas Jr. on a count of aggravated kidnapping in connecting with Ennen’s disappearance.
Police initially listed Ennen as a runaway after her mother reported her missing on January 5. The 15-year-old did not return home after a baby-sitting job at the motel.
Stevens said police found evidence leading investigators to believe Ennen was kidnapped by Salinas, though Stevens would not release details about the evidence.
Salinas is a relative of Ennen’s boyfriend and was a resident of the Carriage House in the 900 block of East Slaton Road, Stevens said. He wouldn’t confirm if Ennen’s baby-sitting job involved Salinas or his room at the motel.
Salinas was in the Lubbock County Detention Center Saturday in lieu of $250,000 bail.
Police urge anyone with information about Ennen to call Lubbock police person crimes detectives at 775-2788 or Crime Line at 741-1000.
Callers may remain anonymous.

No child should ever be assumed to be a runaway. Any assumptions made should lean toward protecting and searching for the child.
Runaways end up murdered all too often. They frequently end up being abused, being forced into prostitution and worse.

I agree Twink, but I guess there is literally not enough manpower or money to throw 40 police into investigating every teenager who disappears. Let's face it, the majority of the time they are runaways, and yes, they put themselves in grave danger, but LE can't be parents to these kids and go out looking for them all the time. Most of the time LE get it right and can identify the ones who have disappeared as a result of a crime. I'm surprised they classified Elizabeth as a runaway though, given the unusual circumstances. But maybe ironically she had gone missing before or something.twinkletoe wrote:No child should ever be assumed to be a runaway. Surveillance captures Lubbock teen's abduction on video
A surveillance video from the last night 15-year-old Elizabeth Ennen was seen alive shows her boyfriend’s father chasing her and then physically forcing her into the parking lot at the Carriage House, court documents released this morning reveal.
Police arrested Humberto Salinas Jr. — the father of her boyfriend— on aggravated kidnapping charges late Friday, but have not yet found Ennen, who has been missing since Jan. 5.
Ennen’s family reported her missing after she didn’t come home from babysitting for Salinas at the Carriage House, 912 E. Slaton Road. Police initially classified her as a runaway, but announced this weekend they believed she’d been kidnapped on Jan. 5.
Police Detective Jeremy Steven Winters wrote the following in a report dated Jan. 21:

Dead body found near Shallowater; could be that of missing girl
Lubbock police found the body of a young white female near County Road 1700 and Farm Road 1729 Monday evening.
Captain Greg Stevens of the Lubbock Police Department says the identity will not be released until confirmed by the medical examiner.
"However, given the circumstances right now, we have notified the family of Elizabeth Ennen. Again, I don't want to draw that conclusion, that this is her. However, we do not have any other outstanding missing person reports that significantly match the description of the body that we found," Stevens said.

Police said Tuesday they suspect the body found along a remote roadside belongs to a missing 15-year-old Lubbock girl who was listed for weeks as a runaway.
Capt. Greg Stevens said the medical examiner's office in Lubbock was expected to officially identify the body Tuesday, less than a day after being found Monday evening, but investigators are ""more than quite sure" it's Elizabeth Ennen.
There are no reports of missing people who "meet the description of the body we found" and the clothing on the body is "more than quite similar" to what the teen was wearing, he said.
Police are obtaining a murder warrant for Humberto Maldonado Salinas Jr., Stephens said. Jail records show the 45-year-old does not have an attorney.

At this time they do not believe the cases have anything to do with one another.
13-year old Hailey Dunn has been missing since December 27th.
15-year old Elizabeth Ennen went missing January 4th.
Tuesday Colorado City City Manager Pete Kampfer told KTXS a lead they've been pursuing in Tennessee was not a valid lead.
Law enforcement were back in Scurry and Mitchell county searching again Tuesday.
They say they're not backing off until they find Hailey.

KCBD NewsChannel 11 looked into the details of Humberto Salinas Jr's
violent criminal background. It begins in 1986 when he served twelve
years for injury to a child. The police report says:
"He stated that he had gotten a steel box - one that he used for a
car jack and had dropped the victim on top of it several times." That
victim was his daughter, who was just four months old at the time.
When officers asked if he was trying to kill his daughter he stated
quote "I don't know I guess I'm crazy." The report says he told one
story and then "broke down and started weeping" and eventually confessed
he had initially told a false story. At first he claimed he fell asleep
holding his daughter and then woke up as he accidentally dropped her.
The documents show she had injuries to her head and leg.
Then in 2007 Salinas was arrested for aggravated assault. The report
says he threatened to kill a man with a knife and assaulted him.
Later that same year he was arrested for domestic assault towards his
current wife Carmen Rosa Manzanares. She said he "hit her in the
mouth, hit her with his left fist, and grabbed her with his right hand
and struck her head against the dash of a vehicle ."
Police reports show he only served one day in jail and paid nothing in fines for the domestic assault.

Texas teen Elizabeth Ennen,
who vanished after babysitting a family friend's children, was found
dead Monday and police today said that she was strangled. Surveillance
video showed the girl being grabbed by her alleged kidnapper, the
husband of a family friend.
Elizabeth, 15, had been missing for 19 days when police discovered her body
along a roadside Monday in Lubbock, Texas. Her mother, Virginia Ennen,
reported her missing in the early morning hours of Jan. 5 when she
didn't return from babysitting the children of a family friend, Humberto
Maldonado Salinas.
Salinas, 45, was apparently present when Virginia Ennen called police.
Police said that Salinas began misdirecting investigators.
"Humberto Salinas Jr. was present when that initial call was made,"
Capt. Greg Stevens said at a press conference today. "At that point,
the person we believe is responsible for her death began the process of
covering up a crime which we believe he had already committed."
Elizabeth's disappearance was originally labeled a runaway case because
Salinas told investigators that he'd left the high school sophomore at
her mother's door, and was merely returning to drop off her purse when
Virginia Ennen said her daughter never came home.
Salinas initially seemed credible to investigators and to the family of
Elizabeth because he is the husband of close family friend Carmen
Manzanares.
"He [Salinas] had brought her home safely on numerous occasions. She
had no reason to doubt the story he was providing," Capt. Stevens said.
"She [Virginia Ennen] was quite distraught and she was relying on what a
trusted friend was helping her with in making a report."
Salinas is being held in Lubbock County Jail on an aggravated kidnapping
charge. He has a previous criminal record that includes charges of
domestic assault and violence on a child, ABC affiliate KAMC reported.
Chris Moss, a cousin of Elizabeth who has been staying with her mother
since the teen disappeared, said that Salinas blamed Elizabeth's
disappearance on his 19-year-old son.
"We were focusing on his son and it was because of him. He directed
everybody towards his son," Moss said. "This Humberto Salinas...would
make comments that his son is a worthless man."
Moss called reports that Salinas' son was Elizabeth's boyfriend false. He said that he was merely a friend.
During the initial days of the investigation, Salinas stopped by the
home of Elizabeth's mother, Moss said. He would ask about the
investigation, Moss said.
"He sat there and looked me in the eyes, he's the devil. That he had the audacity to show his face," Moss said.

I understand the limitation of resources. But if missing children were classified as missing instead of presumed to be runaways, they would have more publicity. The media would cover them.kiwimom wrote:I agree Twink, but I guess there is literally not enough manpower or money to throw 40 police into investigating every teenager who disappears. Any assumptions made should lean toward protecting and searching for the child.
Runaways end up murdered all too often. They frequently end up being abused, being forced into prostitution and worse.
I just think they should not be considered runaways until such time as that status is confirmed, even though an all out manhunt isn't feasible.

Elizabeth Ennen is the 15-year-old Lubbock, Texas teen who babysat for family friends at a local motel and never made it back home. Elizabeth was misclassified a runaway, a classification her family says impeded their efforts when seeking help to find her.
You'll read below the importance of the first responders' actions and assessment of a missing child, and how a misclassified child can hinder an investigation and ultimately result in the death of a child.
You'll also read the roles of supervisory and investigative officers, how they should follow-up on each missing child case to ensure the case was properly classified, and how they should work together to ascertain that nothing has fallen through the cracks.
Time is of the essence every time a child goes missing, as we've learned in Elizabeth's case, there is no room for error. It is a case where the initial officer needs to get it right the first time around, and if he misses something, it should be quickly caught by those responsible for following up on the case.

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Humberto Salinas, Jr., 46 pled guilty to Capital Murder Thursday and was sentenced to life without parole.
Salinas pled guilty Thursday morning at the Lubbock County courthouse for the murder of Elizabeth Ennen, 15. Half of the courtroom was filled with Ennen's family members as they waited to share their emotional testimony.
Police say Salinas kidnapped Ennen from the Carriage House Motel where she was babysitting his two children on January 4th, 2011.
Humberto Salinas, Jr. and his son were friends of the Ennen family at the time of her disappearance.
Salinas was known as a friend to the family before he murdered Ennen.
Eight family members testified. It began with Ennen's cousin, Rick Wallace, who told Salinas that they were not as lucky as him. "You can still talk to your family," said Wallace, "you took that away from us."
Ennen's aunt, Lily, said it was nearly impossible to befriend acquaintances after what he did. She mentioned that her grandchildren cannot even play outside. She pointed out how Salinas initially tried to blame Ennen's murder on his son.
"You threw your own son under the bus," said Lily. "You have no conscience. May God have mercy on your soul because no one else will."
Ennen's cousin, Chris Moss, said he could not believe when they passed out flyers after Ennen was reported missing he actually believed that Salinas had passed out flyers when he knew all along that Ennen was dead.
Ennen's mother, Virginia, said she had given Salinas a place to stay when he had nowhere else to go. "This is how you repay us?" Virginia asked.
The Monterey High School student was reported missing by her mother, Virginia Ennen, on Jan. 5, 2011. She reflected on the tragic day when she was stabbed in the back by someone she once considered her friend.
"You stood on my porch when I reported her missing. How sick is that?" Virginia assured Salinas that the family would no longer waste any more time on him. She ended the testimony with the statement, "It's time for the honorable judge to take out the trash."
Police say Salinas kidnapped Ennen from the Carriage House Motel on Jan. 4, 2011 where she was babysitting his two children on January 4th, 2011.
Surveillance video shows Salinas forced Ennen into the parking lot after he chased her. It showed he returned 30 minutes later alone.
Salinas went to the Ennen's house early in the morning on Jan. 5. He told Ennen's mother he had dropped Elizabeth off and she forgot her purse. Police say Salinas actually helped Ennen's mother file the missing person's report. After Ennen was reported missing, Salinas tried to implicate his own son.
Ennen was laid to rest Jan. 28.
