Toddler kidnapped
A nationwide Amber Alert has been issued for a 17-month-old toddler kidnapped Tuesday night by his mother’s ex-boyfriend.
Sgt. Stephen Davis said the mother – Monique Salter, 29, of Pensacola – and her son were visiting some friends in the 1200 block of West Cervantes Street on Tuesday when the suspect, Keith Squaire Sr., showed up and asked to take the baby to see some friends.
Davis said the mother agreed. A short time later, Squaire, 36, address unavailable – called Salter and told her she’d never see the baby again. Davis said Squaire called Salter several times threatening to harm the baby and also said that he and the baby “would not be taken alive.”
Salter called 911 about 9 p.m. and reported what had happened.
In addition to the Amber Alert being issued around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, law enforcement personnel from multiple jurisdictions began searching for the suspect and toddler.
The suspect and toddler were last seen walking on State Road 4 in Century on Tuesday. The car Squaire borrowed to come to visit the child was found late Tuesday in Brewton by the Brewton Police Department, but there were no signs of the suspect or the baby, Davis said.
The baby – Keith Squaire Jr., 17 months – was last seen wearing a burgundy and white jumpsuit and brown boots. He is a black male about 2 feet 8 inches tall and weighs about 27 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes and his hair is braided.
Keith Squaire Sr. is about 5 feet 10, 235 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.
Davis said Squaire is not considered to be the toddler’s father.
Anyone having information on the location of the suspect and/or the baby is asked to contact Detective Jeff Brown at 435-1980 or the Pensacola Police Department at 435-1900.

Toddler safe, suspect arrested in Brewton

PENSACOLA, Florida (WALA) - A 17 month old toddler who was kidnapped Tuesday night has been found unharmed in East Brewton. The suspect, who is the ex-boyfriend of the mother, has also been apprehended.
Wednesday, 29-year-old Monique Slater of Pensacola was reunited with her son after over 12 agonizing hours.
It all started harmlessly enough when Slater allowed the child to go with her ex boyfriend to visit friends Tuesday afternoon. She never imagined what would happen next.
“A couple of hours later he called and said 'You will not see your child again. You’ll never see your child again,'” said Pensacola Police Chief Chip Simmons. “He called again saying 'I will not be taken alive either.'”
t that point, a nationwide Amber Alert was issued.
Police say the suspect, 36-year-old Keith Anderson Square has a long criminal history. They tracked leads to some of his family in the Brewton area. Brewton Police found Square’s vehicle late Tuesday night, but there was no sign of the Square or the child. Slater says Square has taken care of the child before and was shocked by the phone calls.
“I didn’t know he was going to do nothing like this,” Slater said. “I never would have thought that.”
Her worries were over about 9:00 Wednesday morning when a cousin of the suspect heard about the search and brought the child to the East Brewton Police Department. His name is Mickey and he said that it isn’t unusual for Square to bring the boy over to be watched.
“He just has the baby from time to time and this was not out of the norm, you know what I’m saying,” Mickey said. “The baby would stay there for three or four months at a time.”
Less than an hour after the child was turned over, the search for Square was over as well. East Brewton Police Chief Kenneth Brazil said Square was located on Crenshaw Street in East Brewton.
“Officers walked up on him in a nearby community,” Brazil said. “It was peaceful. He came right to us and turned himself in.”
The apprehension brought to close what had been a worrisome 12 hour marathon; not just for the mother but for all of the law enforcement agencies involved in the search.
Square is being held in the Escambia County, Alabama Jail awaiting an extradition hearing so he can be brought back to Pensacola. He’s been charged with kidnapping.
