ST. LOUIS • Steven Nashaun McCoy, 21, of the 3800 block of Gravois Avenue, was charged Tuesday with first-degree assault and abuse of a child for allegedly shaking and hitting his 3-month-old son.
The baby was in the hospital Tuesday in critical condition with brain swelling and brain bleeding. The abuse allegedly happened at McCoy's home on Monday.
Court documents say the baby seemed fine and was left in McCoy's care when the baby's mother left the home at about 10 a.m. The baby was then taken to the hospital in an ambulance at about 2 p.m., court documents say.
Medical personnel said the baby had to have sustained the injuries after 10 a.m., during the time he was exclusively in McCoy's care. McCoy was arrested at the hospital and is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.

ST. LOUIS, MO. (KTVI) – A St. Louis Judge released an accused child killer, on his own recognizance. Prosecutors are now working to get him back behind bars, while the suspect`s lawyer argues her client has already served too much jail time.
Steven McCoy faces charges of 2nd degree murder and abusing his 3-month-old, causing his death. This is a reported `shaken baby` case. The baby died February of 2011. Since then, McCoy has been waiting for his trial, more than two years.
The three month old baby was last alive in an apartment on Gravois near Grand. I talked to neighbors, who still remember the day the baby died. They were surprised the Dad, Steven McCoy, was allowed to walk out of jail without paying a bond, while still facing those charges.
Defense attorney Sharhonda Shahid argued that she`s never seen `brain slides` that would prove or disprove `shaken baby.` She said even her client McCoy wants the truth. She said McCoy has another child, about three years old now, who`s already had open heart surgery and that leads them to suspect genetic problems.
Judge Bryan Hettenbach let McCoy go after hearing McCoy’s been in jail for so long, reportedly without his attorney seeing brain slide evidence.
Assistant Prosecutor, Jennifer Szczucinski, filed a four page motion saying the defense not only received everything, but even signed off ‘discovery by the State is completed.’
The prosecutor also said brain ‘…slides were completed in April of 2012,’ yet they remained waiting at ‘SLU Hospital’ until the defense attorney picked them ‘December of 2012,’ (about eight months later).
Jennifer Joyce`s Office is asking the Judge to reconsider and lock up McCoy again. The Assistant Prosecutor also points out the McCoy was arrested for assaulting his son`s mother, though he was not convicted in that case. McCoy also has another child in the care of that woman, who is a witness in this case.

On Friday, July 19, Judge Hettenbach granted to the defense’s motion to release Steven McCoy on personal recognizance over the objection of the State of Missouri. Mr. McCoy is charged with Murder in the Second Degree and Abuse of a Child Resulting in Death. The State has filed a Motion to Reconsider Bond Reduction. We believe it is a matter of public safety that Mr. McCoy be held with a sufficient and appropriate bond, given the severity of this matter.
The State of Missouri would like to see this case go to trial as quickly as possible. We are committed to ensuring the defense has the information and evidence they need to represent their client, and submitted court documents support that we have fully fulfilled that commitment.
In an effort to protect Mr. McCoy’s right to a fair trial, the State of Missouri is unable to discuss specifics of this case outside of court filings.
