The PEARCE Children - 8/ 2 abandoned - Minneapolis MN

Authorities charged a Minnesota woman with two
counts of neglect after her 12- and 13-year-old children were found
abandoned at a Merrillville motel.

Latina Tawanda Pearce, 31, who listed a Kankakee,
Ill., address, allegedly beat them and several of their six younger
siblings, then sent them across 11 lanes of traffic on U.S. 30 to a
grocery store. When they returned, the mother had packed up their
belongings from a motel at 8275 Louisiana St., and left with their six
brothers and sisters on Feb. 9.

The 13-year-old told police the family, which
lives in Minneapolis, had been staying at the motel for a few days and
were in town for a funeral, although the girl said she never learned who died.

After their mother left, the girl tried calling
her mother’s cell phone several times but couldn’t reach her. The next
day, the teen reached her school counselor in Minnesota, who contacted
Merrillville police.

Two days after the children were abandoned, Pearce
called Merrillville police Detective Jeff Rice asking where her kids
were. Police had been unable to reach her by phone.

The girl had lacerations around her neck, and the
boy had lacerations around his eye, mouth and neck, the probable cause affidavit states.

The charges are punishable by a maximum three-year sentence.
