DEVELOPING: Authorities in California issued an Amber Alert Monday for two girls police say were snatched by their father after he threatened to harm them.

Police are searching for 6-year-old Natalya Litwin and 2-year-old Katelyn Litwin after their father, 34 year old
Stephen Litwin, allegedly abducted them from their home in Bellflower, Calif.

Authorities said Monday that Litwin is believed to be driving a silver 2004 Mercury Mountaineer sports utility vehicle with California license plate 5LGE045. They said the man is possibly headed to the area of Oakdale, Conn.

Litwin is described as 6-foot-4, weighing 165 pounds. He has brown hair and eyes, and tattoos on his left forearm.

Police are urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of Litwin and the girls to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lakewood Station at 562-623-3500.

BELLFLOWER, Calif. -- Two girls allegedly abducted by their father from a home in Bellflower were found unharmed today in Utah after the man learned an Amber Alert had been issued and contacted authorities.

Stephen Andrew Litwin, 34, allegedly took Natalya, 6, and Katelyn, 2, about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Deputy Benjamin Grubb of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said.

An Amber Alert was issued early this morning, and authorities released photos of the girls and a license number and description of a vehicle believed to be driven by Litwin. About 8:20 a.m., he contacted authorities, Deputy Lillian Peck said.

"Detectives have learned that suspect Litwin had traveled with the missing children to the state of Utah," Peck said. "Litwin heard about the Amber Alert via the media, contacted the local law enforcement authorities, and is awaiting interview by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department detectives."

Sheriff's officials did not disclose exactly where in Utah the man and girls were found. Deputies had said earlier that "Litwin has reportedly made threats to harm his two daughters."

The mother also had told authorities Litwin might be on his way to Connecticut.

"The situation was a misunderstanding because of their estranged marriage," Thomas said.

Litwin was detained but never arrested in Utah. About 8:20
a.m. Feb 28, about four hours after the Amber Alert was issued, Litwin
heard about the alert through the media and contacted local law
enforcement authorities in Utah.

Litwin told local authorities, who were in contact with
sheriff's detectives, he was taking the girls on vacation to visit their
grandfather in Connecticut. Upon hearing this information from
sheriff's detectives, the Los Angeles District Attorney decided not to
charge Litwin, who was released a few hours after being detained.Thomas did not say where in Utah Litwin and the girls were found.
