Mother takes 3 small children and vanishes
Woman had lost custody and officials fear for kids' safety
Police released family photos and continued their hunt Thursday for a
woman and her three children she is suspected of abducting.
Meanwhile, it was unclear why an employee of Child Protective Services,
which has had custody of the children since last year, waited two hours
before calling police to report them missing.
At the unsupervised visit Wednesday, a CPS worker left Rojo and her children at the McDonald's for an hour. When she returned about 5 p.m., the family had vanished, Haas said. The worker did not call police for two hours.
“It creates lag time for us,” Haas said. “If you factor in the time
when (the worker) dropped them off, (Rojo) had a three-hour head start.”Laurie
Fineman, interim deputy director of the county's Children Services
Division, would not comment on Rojo's case, but said all CPS workers
are expected to immediately contact law enforcement if a child can't be
located.
“Any child that is in our custody that we're responsible for, if
they ever are not where they are supposed to be, then an immediate call
is made to law enforcement, which will take immediate action to find
the child,” Fineman said.Fineman said she did not know whether the worker in this case violated those guidelines.“I hope that's not the case,” she said.Because of confidentiality regulations, CPS can't say whether employees have been disciplined, Fineman said.
Cathedral City police served a search warrant at Rojo's home in the
1500 block of East San Rafael Drive on Thursday afternoon, but could
not find any indication of where she may have headed.“Right now it may be anywhere,” Haas said. “The common thought is she went to family in Mexico.”The
unidentified father of the children has been deported to Mexico, police
said, noting that Rojo once had a restraining order against him. The
U.S. Border Patrol has been alerted. The California Highway Patrol also issued an emergency missing advisory, one step below an Amber Alert.Police said family members could not offer information on where Rojo or her children might be.Desert Sun reporters Kate McGinty, Brian Indrelunas and City News Service contributed to this report.
