Parris was found unresponsive on Jan. 3.On Wednesday, Parris'
mother testified about the day her daughter died. The jury also heard

Spartanburg man gets life in killing of baby girl

A Spartanburg man received a life prison sentence Thursday in the death of an 11-month-old girl.
Rashawn S. Murphy
Rashawn S. Murphy, 24, was found guilty of homicide by child abuse at the conclusion of a four-day trial, according to the 7th Circuit Solicitor's Office. He is not eligible for parole.
Jurors heard testimony about the January 2009 death of Parris Samiya Rogers, determining it was not an accident, according to the statement from the solicitor's office. A pathologist testified that Parris died of head trauma and also had a broken right leg.
Sheriff's deputies determined Murphy was left alone with Rogers, her 8-year-old brother and her 2-year-old brother for nearly three hours. Murphy initially told investigators he placed Parris in bed and didn't realize there was a problem until her 8-year-old brother said the child wasn't moving.
The oldest brother, now 11, testified that he heard loud noises coming from the baby's room during the night. The child told jurors Murphy explained the noise by saying he had moved furniture.
“This case is a horrific tragedy,” Solicitor Barry Barnette said in the statement. “Rashawn Murphy brutally killed an innocent child, and he tried to lie about his pathetic actions.”
