60 years for Md. man in infant’s death
By the Associated Press
WESTMINSTER, Md. — A Sykesville man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend’s 8-month-old daughter.
Thirty-year-old Donald Ray Pevia Jr. was convicted in April of second-degree murder and numerous other offenses.
At sentencing Tuesday, Carroll County Circuit Judge J. Barry Hughes said this was the worst case of child abuse he’d seen in 27 years in law.
Eight-month-old Ky’leigh Rogers was taken to Carroll Hospital Center on March 3, 2009 with apparent breathing trouble and died later that day. Her death was ruled a homicide, caused by bleeding from numerous internal injuries caused by blunt force trauma.
Pevia had been one of the infant’s main caregivers in the weeks before her death.

The imprisoned Sykesville, Carroll County, man convicted last April for
the murder of an 8-month-old girl is seeking a review of his case.
Donald Ray Pevia Jr., 31, was sentenced to 60 years in prison July 5
after being convicted of charges including second-degree murder.
Pevia was found guilty of second-degree murder, first-and second-degree
assault, first-degree child abuse resulting in death, first-degree child
abuse resulting in severe physical injury, second-degree child abuse
having care and custody of a child, and second-degree child abuse by a
household member.
Pevia requested post-conviction relief of his attorney William Welch,
citing that he no longer wanted Welch as his lawyer, according to case documents.
A three-judge panel review was scheduled Friday in Carroll County
Circuit Court and postponed at the request of Welch due to the
post-conviction request.
A new date for the panel review has not yet been scheduled.
Pevia was the boyfriend of Angela Mabe when her daughter Ky'leigh Rogers, 8 months, died March 3, 2009.
Ky'leigh likely bled to death as the result of multiple injuries caused
by blunt force trauma, according to Assistant Medical Examiner Dr.
Russell Alexander. She suffered a torn liver and spleen, two fractures
of her skull and fractured ribs, among other injuries.
