"Infant John" SMITH - xx age - Bellaire (S of Wheeling WV) OH
An investigation into alleged child neglect led to the arrest of a 19-year-old Bellaire man.Trenton
M. Smith, formerly of 1717 Belmont St., Apt. 6, Bellaire has been
charged with endangering a child. The third-degree felony count resulted
after his infant son was found to have suffered injuries, including
several broken bones.According to Police Chief Michael P.
Kovalyk, the child had broken bones in both legs, and the wounds were in
different stages of healing. The charges stem from a complaint
filed by police on Jan. 25. Before any charges were filed, Kovalyk said
the department had to wait for results of a medical examination. The
investigation began after police were notified of a complaint from
Belmont County Children Services after the child sustained injuries."There
was an emergency call (at the residence) in which he said he fell with
the child," Kovalyk said. "Then, through visits to the local doctor, the
mother and the grandmother felt there was something else was wrong. So
the child was taken to Columbus to do a more thorough evaluation."Belmont
County Prosecutor Christopher Berhalter said cooperation between the
Belmont County Department of Job and Family Services' Children Services
and the police department was the key to this complex investigation."Their
cooperation is a good example of how law enforcement and Children
Services continue to work together to help children," Berhalter said.Kovalyk
also credit Children Services' Nickie Cordery and Karen Holmes for
their work, as well as Lt. Donna Baroch, who was the lead investigator
on the case."It was very time consuming, particularly because of
manpower issues and budget issues, and because we wanted to make sure
everything was in line before any charges were filed," Kovalyk said.
