DYLAN AKERS - 8 yo - North Knoxville TN
A young child was shot to death Saturday night and a female relative
was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in critical
condition in what police are investigating as a homicide-attempted
suicide, Lt. Tim Snoderly of the Knoxville Police Department said.
The Knoxville Fire Department received an injured person call from
the KenJo Market on Merchant Drive at Central Avenue Pike at around 9
p.m., where the child and relative were found in a bathroom.
The identities of the child, whom Snoderly said was younger than age
10, and the woman were not released pending notification of the family.
Snoderly said law enforcement also knew where they were from,
although he would not disclose that information. He did say they were
not from Knoxville, but from “from the surrounding area.”
The child was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was taken to the UT Regional Forensic Center.
The market was sealed off and the area flooded with emergency vehicles Saturday night included KPD, KFD and Rural Metro.
Snoderly said police are still investigating the circumstances around the shooting.

DYLAN AKERS - 8 yo - Knoxville TN
KNOXVILLE — Autopsies are expected Tuesday on the bodies of a woman
and her 8-year-old grandson, the apparent victims of a murder/suicide,
police said this morning.
Dylan Akers was found dead of a gunshot wound at about 9 p.m.
Saturday in a restroom at the KenJo Market on Merchant Drive at Central
Avenue Pike, according to Darrell DeBusk, spokesman for the Knoxville
Police Department.
Also found in the restroom was Mary Baker, 54, of Knoxville, who also had a gunshot wound.
Baker died Sunday afternoon at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, according to KPD Lt. Doug Stiles.
Stiles declined to say how many shots were fired or the type of weapon involved because of the ongoing probe.
"We are investigating a murder/suicide," Stiles said this morning.
Stiles said the probe by KPD Investigator Jason Booker uncovered a
suicide note, but Stiles declined to elaborate on the contents of the
note.
Stiles said he was unsure if Baker was Akers’ maternal or paternal
grandmother. He said Baker was the boy’s caregiver, but he was unsure if
she was his legal guardian.
A clerk at the KenJo Market heard the gunshots in the restroom and
went to investigate, Stiles said. That’s when the bodies were
discovered.
More details as they develop online and in Tuesday’s News Sentinel.
