Casey Anthony: Nothing story gets a lot of attention

For a nothing story, today’s development in the Casey Anthony case sure gained a lot of airtime.
The stations explored the bogus, hand-written motion sent by a Michigan inmate suggesting that Anthony wants to drop defense attorney Jose Baez.
Baez said in several interviews — on “In Session” and WKMG-Channel 6 — that there was nothing to the story.
But that didn’t stop WFTV-Channel 9 from wondering what Anthony would have to do to if she wanted to fire Baez — and the station put speculation about a nothing story at the top of the 6 p.m. newscast.
“She could just fire an attorney without asking anyone’s permission,” WFTV’s Kathi Belich said. “There’s no reason to believe she wants to. But if that were to happen, our legal analyst says that would not delay her May 9 murder trial.”
WKMG’s Tony Pipitone turned to Lydia Gardner, the Orange County clerk of courts, to explain how a letter from inmate Curtis Jackson wound up in the Anthony file. “What is submitted for the file, we place into the file. We render no judgment,” she said.
That sets the office apart from most people who follow the case.
That story was at the top of WKMG’s newscast, even though Pipitone called it “all just an attempt by a convicted felon with a lot of time on his hands to interject himself into a case with which he has no connection.”
WESH-Channel 2’s Amanda Ober described the case as “this ever-growing drama” in starting her report about Jackson. Ober used footage of Baez telling “In Session” about how Jackson has tried to insert himself in the case before. Jackson has written about having knowledge of the case and of what happened to Caylee. Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.
Ober noted there will a hearing Wednesday in the case. We’ll hope for some news from there.
