Stepdad to stand trial for murder
January 14, 2011 4:20pm

The stepfather of a slain Calgary teen whose body was found in the family’s Canyon Meadows home will stand trial this fall.

Bradley Wade Rietze appeared briefly in Calgary Court of Queen’s Bench on Friday to schedule a three-week trial beginning Nov. 21.

“The plea is not guilty,” defence lawyer Alain Hepner told Justice Sandy Park.

Hepner said because his client is charged with first-degree murder, he must stand trial before a jury unless the Crown consents to a judge only hearing.

“It doesn’t really matter what I suggest, the Crown wants a jury,” he said.

Crown lawyer Susan Pepper said the prosecution wants the case presented to a jury.

“It’s a first-degree murder charge so the Crown has a right to a jury trial,” Pepper said.

For all other charges where a jury trial is available, that decision is in the hands of the accused.

Rietze, 46, is charged in connection with the slaying last Jan. 18, of Brittney McInnes, his 17-year-old stepdaughter.

McInnes’ corpse was found by her aunt stuffed in a box spring hours after a police search of the Canaveral Cres. S.W. home turned up nothing.

Investigators said they believed the body had been there for some time.

Police have not said how the Grade 12 student died.

The accused was taken to hospital earlier on the same day the victim was found after an ambulance was called to the home.

In the hours which followed, he complained of breathing problems, said his house had been broken into and had scratches on his neck and face.

His stepdaughter of 13 years lived in the home with him, her mother and two siblings — an older brother and younger sister.

Rietze remains in custody pending trial.

Slain teen honoured a year after her death

January 28, 2011 5:41pm

Hundreds of teens across the city and country will don Superman shirts, hats, stickers and even face paint on Tuesday in remembrance of a girl murdered one year ago.

Brittney McInnes, 17, was found dead in her Canyon Meadows home on Jan. 17, 2010, prompting friends to create a Facebook group in her honour.

A part-time employee at Rexall Drugs, the bubbly and popular teen wore a Man of Steel sticker on her name tag while at work and also had one on her bedframe at home, so the group’s 3,000 online members declared Feb. 1 “Superman Day” in her honour.

“Anything they want to do to participate,” said McInnes family spokesman Russell Wallace on the event.

“The family has seen so much support from the community and the country and people all over, it’s so amazing.

“It really gives you a feeling it isn’t such a hard world out there anymore, there are caring people.”

A candlelight vigil will also be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday a the Lutheran Church of the Cross (10620 Elbow Dr. S.W.), the same day a scholarship fund is launched in collaboration with the Legacy Children’s Foundation, aimed at helping students from low-income families.

“We didn’t want to limit ourselves with the criteria, we’ve left it open to something with music or the arts,” said Wallace.

“We’d like to set our goal as high as possible but we’d like to see it reach $100,000 in the first year.”

Anyone wanting to donate to the scholarship can go to www.legacygiftofmusic.com/superbritt_fund.html.

Brittney’s stepfather, Brad Rietze, 46, has plead not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder in the case and a trial is scheduled to being Nov. 21.

A year after the murder of a popular teenage girl, family and friends are trying to channel their grief into something positive and have established a scholarship in her name.

As a tribute to 17-year-old Brittney McInnes, who was found slain in her Canyon Meadows home on Jan. 17, 2010, the SuperBritt Scholarship Fund will be launched on Tuesday.

During the evening, friends, family and supporters will gather for a candlelight service at Lutheran Church of the Cross, on Elbow Drive, to remember Brittney and pay tribute to those who are suffering or have suffered from domestic abuse.

"(Brittney's mom Kelly) is very excited about this fund," said Russell Wallace, the slain girl's uncle. "She thought it would be great to have something so positive to come out of a negative and a way to give back to the community who's offered her so much support."

Brittney's murder stunned everyone who knew her and the family when it happened last year. Her stepfather is accused in the killing.

Wallace said the family has struggled with their grief but is slowly rebuilding their lives. Brittney's younger sister, now 16, is healing through music, with guitar lessons courtesy of the Legacy Children's Foundation, which worked with the family to set up the scholarship.

The scholarship will help low-income young people further their education within the arts.

"It's an opportunity for people to give back to the community and honour this girl's legacy," said the foundation's Darryl Wernham. "She loved music and was such a marvellous role model and leader for young people.

"Hopefully people will think about this and maybe give to the scholarship fund and give to other kids, and help the family heal."

Brittney's death touched many people within the community. A Facebook page set up in her memory has 3,000 members, all of whom are invited to celebrate Tuesday as Superman Day. The young woman loved the superhero and wore his image over her name tag at the local grocery store where she worked.

"It's been a year, but no matter how much time goes by Britt, you will always be remembered, and forever loved," posted one Facebook member.

Bradley Wade Rietze, the girl's stepfather, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death.
