Day parole extended for pedophile who drowned girl

REGINA — Day parole has been extended for a convicted pedophile who drowned a five-year-old Calgary girl and stuffed her body into a garbage bin.
But the National Parole Board says Harold Smeltzer must still return to a Regina halfway house at night until he establishes more supports in the community.
He was first released to a halfway house in November 2008.
Smeltzer served 27 years of a life sentence for the murder of Kimberley Thompson, who was snatched off the street in 1980 while on her way to kindergarten.
He was also convicted in several other sexual assaults and has admitted to attacking 40 young girls.
Smeltzer may leave the halfway house during the day for another six months, but cannot be in a place where there are children or have any contact with them.
