Montreal's Azan Sahil Niazi, 3, was abducted by his father and taken to Pakistan.

A three-year-old Montreal boy who was kidnapped by his father and taken to Pakistan has been reunited with his mom.

"It is the end of a nightmare", said the boy’s mother, Roshni Desai, a 28-year-old dental hygienist.

Desai was with her son, Azan Sahil Niazi, at Montreal’s Missing Children's Network on Wednesday to talk about the ordeal.

Police say the father of Azan Sahil Niazi abducted the toddler on March 8 and took him to Pakistan.

The couple was in the middle of a separation at the time of the abduction.

The father allegedly picked up the boy from his east end Montreal daycare, and headed to the airport.

With the help of Montreal police, the RCMP, the Missing Children's Network and Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the mother travelled to Pakistan to find Azan.

On April 14, roughly five weeks after he was kidnapped, Desai was finally reunited with her son.

MONTREAL — A Quebec couple's decision not to marry worked to a woman's advantage after her son was abducted and taken overseas last month.

A Pakistani court granted Roshni Desai full custody of her son Azan after his father Jhahanzeb Niazi kidnapped the boy on March 8.

Desai had to travel to Pakistan to obtain the judgment. She said the judge ruled in her favour because the two had never married and the child was under seven years of age.

Desai was reunited with her son April 14 in Islamabad, after a five-week separation where she said "every day felt like a month."

Desai met with reporters on Wednesday to tell her story and to thank the many groups that helped her, including Montreal police, the RCMP, Foreign Affairs and the Missing Children's Network.

Her story began four years ago when she met Niazi through friends. Desai said she is embarrassed now that she realizes there were signs that her boyfriend wasn't one of the good ones, but at the time she chalked it up to cultural differences.
