Jury find man guilty of toddler's murder

The jury has returned a guilty verdict in the case of abused Whanganui two-year-old Karl Perigo-Check.

Twenty-four-year-old Rikki Ngatai-Check was accused of kicking the toddler in the stomach, fatally splitting his pancreas.

In his summing up Justice Williams told the jury it had to decide whether Ngatai-Check was guilty of manslaughter or murder.

The jury took just three hours to find him guilty of murder.

Sentencing has been set down for early March.

The toddler's father, Wanganui gang member Karl Check, is serving life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 15 years for the 2007 murder of two-year-old Jhia Te Tua during a Wanganui altercation between the Mongrel Mob and Black Power gangs.
