Dive team finds body in Sturgeon Creek
May 4, 2011
Crews searched through the water on Wednesday afternoon.
A dive team located a body in Sturgeon Creek Wednesday, but officers have not yet confirmed the identity.
Officials previously said a person, possibly a teen, was presumed to have drowned after being sighted in distress in the water Tuesday.
Crews checked for the person in the water yesterday, but could not locate anyone.
Jamie Gural said he was sitting by the river shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday when he saw a bag float by. Shortly afterwards, he noticed a person in the water, who appeared to be a teen boy, gasping for air.
Gural said he tried to reach the boy but couldn't get to him while battling the current.
"(It) was just a young guy in the water there and I acted on impulse, jumped in and tried to grab him," said Gural.
Wednesday afternoon, police said witness information suggested that a male, about 16 to 17 years old, entered the water west of Woodhaven Bridge and was last seen east of that location in the creek.
The body was pulled from the water around 3 p.m. Wednesday.
"It's a sense of relief, for sure. We want to bring closure to someone's family," said Sgt. Rob Riffel of the Winnipeg police's underwater search and rescue team.
Search crews check Sturgeon Creek after a person was sighted going under the water Tuesday afternoon.
At Sturgeon Creek High School, students are waiting for word on the victim's identity, wondering if it was someone they knew.
"(If) it was on of my friends, that would be devastating," said Austin Coughlin, a student.
A red backpack and hat were also found near the area, which investigators hope will help them identify the individual who drowned.
An autopsy will likely be conducted on the body.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call police at 986-2841, or Crime Stoppers at 986-6222.
