A 2-year-old baby was murdered yesterday in Hopkins County. The Hopkins
County Sheriff's Department tells FOX 7 the father's girlfriend has been
arrested and charged with murder.
It happened Saturday morning in Earlington, Kentucky.
Hopkins County Coroner, Dennis Mayfield says, "The Hopkins County Central
dispatch received a call about 10:29 Saturday that there was a
2-year-old unresponsive male juvenile here."
Authorities say that
2-year-old was Kaleib Higgins. Neighbors tell FOX 7 the child and his
family moved into this home at 410 Highland Avenue within the last few
months from Tennessee. One neighbor said he heard the ambulance pull up
saw a woman screaming and crying outside the home.
"They treated the child here at the scene and transported the child to
Madisonville regional Medical Center's ER where he was worked there for
45 minutes and declared dead at about 11:40."
Mayfield says a cause of death was determined Saturday afternoon.
"The autopsy determined that the child's cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma to the head and body."
The Hopkins County Sheriff's Department has charged the father's
girlfriend, 28-year-old Alexis Mayes, with murder. Mayes is being held
in the Hopkins County Jail on a $500,000 cash bond.
Mayfield says this case has been particularly hard for all those involved.
"I'm not used to it. Its really bothered me and its bothers several people
the emergency staff, the responding officers and its very difficult to handle right now."
Neighbors tell FOX 7 there were several other young children in the home at the time of the murder.
The Commonwealth Attorney's Office is working closely with Hopkins County
authorities on this case. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with
information is urged to contact the Hopkins County Sheriffs Department.

Poster's Note: This PM was received today. We have not verified the source but I felt it was necessary to share with all...
to whom it may concern:
I am Kalieb's aunt, and likewise the
spokesman for our family. I would like to thank you for putting up this
information and making it known for those who have no voice. Words cant
express how it feels to lose a family member, especially beings and
children that cant harm anyone. My nephew resides in Springfield, Tn. He
was only visiting his dad and getting to know his dad and his dad's
side of the family. Kaleib was my sister's only child, a child that she
was not supposed to be able to conceive. She and our family loved him so
very much. He was mannerable and had a smile that would light up every
picture. We are setting up a contribution fund for funeral arrangements,
if anyone would like to contribute. Again Thanks. And if I can be of any
assistance, provide information that you may need. Please let me know

Woman indicted in toddler's death
A woman accused of killing a two-year-old boy has been indicted on murder charges in Hopkins County Court.
Alexis Mayes, 28, the father's girlfriend, is charged with first degree murder after an autopsy last month found the child, Kaleib Higgins, died of multiple blunt force trauma to the head and body.
Mayes is facing anywhere from 20 years to life in prison.
The pre-trial conference is set for next month but officials say they're taking their time with a case of this magnitude.
"The fact that it being a murder charge, being a very serious offense, we anticipate we will have subsequent pretrial conferences after that before it's actually set for trial resolve," said Kathy Senter, First Assistant Commonwealth Attorney.
Mayes is being held at the Hopkins County Jail on $500,000 bond.
