BREANA BODGE - 14 yo (2011) - Roswell NM
Roswell police have charged a 29-year-old woman in the death of her boyfriend’s teenage daughter.
Police say Steffanie Kautz was arrested Monday on child abuse charges stemming
from the May 3 death of 14-year-old Breana Bodge.
According to KOB-TV, the girl is thought to have died of diabetic
shock while in Kautz’s care.
Investigators told KOB conditions inside the home were “unlivable” as food, dirty clothing,
trash and other items were strewn about the house.

Family of woman accused in death investigation speaks out

The sister of a Roswell woman facing charges in connection to the death of a teenager is speaking out.
Natasha Kautz says her sister, Steffanie, didn't know what to do when the 14-year-old girl slipped into a diabetic coma last week and wants the father to be held accountable as well.
Police say Steffanie Kautz was watching the teen the morning they believe Breana Bodge may have slipped into a Diabetic coma and died.
"It's a nightmare, it really is a nightmare. It just feels like you're going to wake up from a dream and it's all going to be over, and it's not," said Natasha Kautz.
Kautz says she wants to make it clear the only thing her sister Steffanie is guilty of is not knowing how to care for the young girl's diabetic condition.
"She just needed to be with somebody that could really watch her and take care of her. My sister doesn't know a lot about stuff like that. She was calling a lot of people asking them what to do," explained Natasha Kautz.
In the criminal complaint, Natasha told police her sister Steffanie called her several times throughout the day telling her Breana was sick.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 asked Natasha why her sister didn't call 911.
"She has been in trouble previously and she was afraid of that. She didn't know what to do and what to say if she were to take her in. She didn't know and she was really scared," said Kautz.
Police say by the time they were called it was too late.
Investigators are awaiting autopsy results to figure out exactly what killed Breana Bodge.
Steffanie Kautz is charged with child abuse resulting in death and is expected to be in court for a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

OK here we have a case of a GIRLFRIEND neglecting a child who dies. It's usually the boyfriend, but girlfriends do it to. PARENTS: No one will love and care about your children like you do. Please make sure you put responsible people in charge of your precious children before leaving them alone.
This does sound like a case where the father should have some culpability if he did indeed leave his daughter in the care of someone who didn't know how to take care of a diabetic person. Of course that girl should have called 911, so they are both at fault.

Stepmother lets teenager die to save herself from being arrested
NM - 14-year-old Roswell, New Mexico, resident Breana Bodge passed away from diabetic shock on May 3, 2011. While police knew as much, new details have emerged from the case, claiming her own stepmother as the prime suspect. 29-year-old Steffanie Kautz, Bodge's stepmother, was left in charge of the girl when she went into diabetic shock. Instead of calling for help, Bodge's stepmother took no action and instead let the teenager die. Bodge's father came home early the next day to find his daughter unresponsive and called 911. However, Kautz revealed in her testimony that she did not call an ambulance because she has several warrants out for her arrest on drug-related charges.

I'm afraid it's more than ignorance or indifference...just another crackhead protecting herself...

Yep....she so worried about getting in trouble that she let this little girl die. She deserves to pay for her neglect.
