Roswell police say the death of a 14-year-old girl last week was
definitely child abuse, and her 1-year-old stepsister has also tested
positive for meth. Investigators believe Breena Bodge's
stepmother watched her slowly die from diabetic shock and didn't do
anything about it because she was hiding from the law. "We're
talking about a 24-hour period where she had the opportunity to get this
girl some help. Get her to the hospital, get an ambulance over there,
do something," said Roswell Police Officer Travis Holley. "She chose to
do nothing, and as a result of that this young girl is dead."
Steffanie
Kautz, 29, is behind bars and charged in Bodge's death. She also faces
additional child abuse charges stemming from the drug test results of
her 1-year-old baby girl. Bodge's body was found in a Roswell
apartment Tuesday May, 3. A criminal complaint shows everyone in the
family knew Bodge was a severe diabetic. Police believe she slipped into
a diabetic coma Monday morning and no one did anything to help. Her
father, who lives in the apartment part-time, found her unresponsive
Tuesday morning when he came home from work and called 911, but it was
too late. Court documents show the girl was found lying on a bed with
dried blood on her face. Her 1-year-old stepsister was crawling on the
floor nearby. "In 14 years of law enforcement this is about the most disgusting thing I've seen," Holley remarked. Investigators
say the apartment was filthy and they found evidence of drug use
inside. Kautz had drug warrants out of Texas, and they believe that's
why she didn't call for help. "She indicated during our
investigation that's part of the reason why she neglected to take the
girl to the hospital or call," Holley explained. "She knew she had
warrants, and she didn't want to go to jail." Three loaded
bottles of insulin were found near Bodge's body. In a police report,
Bodge's 15 year-old sister, who lives in Lubbock, Texas, told police
that Bodge said she drank and did meth and cocaine with her father and
step-mom. Police are still waiting for the autopsy results to
determine Bodge's exact cause of death. Investigators would not comment
on if additional charges could be filed against Bodge's father. They did
say they are still investigating and would not rule out that
possibility. The 1-year-old girl was removed from the apartment
immediately and is in state custody. Sources tell us the family does
have a past with social workers in multiple states.
