Andrew Keith Johnston, 18, was arrested Sunday and charged with aggravated child abuse.
NORMANDY, Tenn. – A one-month-old boy is fighting for his life and his father behind bars for inflicting injuries to his son, authorities in Bedford County said.
Andrew Keith Johnston, 18, was arrested on Sunday after the boy was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
Authorities said the baby was taken to a local hospital on Friday where he was treated for hypothermia and his condition seemed to be improving.
According to a report filed with the Tullahoma Police Department, the child was normal and responsive until early Sunday morning, when his mother noticed that the infant's left eye was extremely dilated, and it was discovered that the child had hemorrhaging in the brain.
The child was taken to Vanderbilt where doctors reported the boy also had broken ribs and fingerprint marks on one of his legs.
The boy's father told hospital personnel that he put the baby in cold water in the shower for a few minutes in an attempt to wake him.
Johnston was charged with aggravated child abuse and booked into the Bedford County jail on a $100,000 bond.

Homicide charges likely against Normandy father

Andrew Johnston, 18, was arrested last October and charged with abusing his one-month-old son, who later died.
NORMANDY, Tenn. – Homicide charges are likely to be filed against a Normandy man charged with abusing his one-month-old son, who later died from his injuries.
An autopsy from the state medical examiner office determined the cause of death of the infant to be homicide, according to a report in the Shelbyville Times Gazette, and the aggravated child abuse charge against the child's father, 18-year-old Andrew Keith Johnston, would likely be amended.
Johnston's son died last October 22 after doctors at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville removed him from life support a night earlier.
Authorities became aware of the alleged abuse on the night of October 15, after a call went out about an unresponsive baby on Normandy Road.
The baby was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for hypothermia and his condition seemed to be improving.
According to a report filed with the Tullahoma Police Department, the child was normal and responsive until a few days later, when his mother noticed that the infant's left eye was extremely dilated, and it was discovered that the child had hemorrhaging in the brain.

The boy's father told hospital personnel that he put the baby in cold water in the shower for a few minutes in an attempt to wake him.
A preliminary hearing has been set for February 24 during which a judge will determine whether there is enough evidence to bind Johnston over to the Bedford County grand jury.

Re: WILLIAM JOHNSTON - 1 month - (2010) / Accused Andrew Keith Johnston, father Normandy TN
Trial dates have been set for early next year for a Normandy man charged with killing his infant son.
Jury selection will begin Monday, Jan. 30 in the case of Andrew Keith
Johnston, 18, who is charged with first degree murder for the death of
his one-month-old son William.
Attorneys involved with the case said Johnston's trial would take three
days at the most, but the entire week has been set aside for the
proceedings.
Circuit Court Robert Crigler set Oct. 17 for a pre-trial conference and
that Johnston will be on the Circuit Court docket each month in case any
other issues arise.
In setting the trial for next year, Crigler noted that most everyone
involved in the prosecution and defense on the Johnston case will also
be involved in September and October with the death penalty trial of
Jacob Shaffer in Lincoln County.
Shaffer is charged with murdering his estranged wife, three of her
relatives and a family friend, and a Bedford County jury will be seated
for that case on Sept. 12.
Authorities became aware of the alleged abuse of William Johnston on
Oct. 15, 2010, after a call went out about an unresponsive baby.
The boy was taken to Harton Regional Medical Center in Tullahoma by
Bedford County emergency personnel and, according to a report by
Tullahoma police officer Tiffany Host, nurse and administrative
supervisor Keith Cornelius stated that the infant had severe head
injuries.
Harton treated the child for hypothermia and the boy was kept under observation until Oct. 17.
The report stated the child was normal and responsive until early that
morning, when the boy's mother, Amanda Voss, noticed that the infant's
left eye was extremely dilated, and it was discovered by Dr. Clifford
Seyler after a CT scan that William "was suffering severe hemorrhaging
in his brain."
A nurse stated in the Tullahoma police report that "the left side of his
face and head were swollen, his left leg was stiff and he appeared to
be holding his leg out."
William was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center and during some point of
the transport, the boy also apparently suffered a stroke from the
hemorrhaging.
"Lifeflight nurses reported to Harton staff that they observed broken
ribs in William's x-ray and fingerprint marks on his left leg," the
police report stated.
Host's report also stated that Voss told doctors at Harton that she had
gone to the store for approximately 10 minutes. When she returned,
Johnston had told emergency medical service that the child was
"unresponsive."
The father told hospital personnel that he put the baby in cold water in
the shower for a few minutes in an attempt to wake him, the report
stated.
The Johnston baby died Oct. 22 after doctors at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville removed him from life support.
Johnston had first been charged with aggravated child abuse, however an autopsy report stated that the child died of "non-accidental trauma" and that the cause of death was homicide.
