Casey Anthony: How tough a jury? How quick a trial?

“Drama-filled day,” WKMG-Channel 6 titled today’s news in the Casey Anthony case.
You bet it was, and getting a jury was the most dramatic news. Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.
WFTV-Channel 9’s Kathi Belich reported that that station’s legal expert thought the jury’s makeup — seven women and five men — was not good for the defense.
WFTV jury expert Randy Fisher highlighted that one juror described herself as being a good mother who’s strongly for the death penalty. Fisher noted that the defense did strike a woman with a prestigious job, and Fisher described her as “being very dangerous for the defense.”
WKMG-Channel 6’s Tony Pipitone highlighted that it’s “a tougher jury for the defense because these people are more likely to vote to convict, research shows, because they are also more likely to accept the death penalty as a possible outcome.”
Yet Judge O.H. Eaton, legal analyst for WESH-Channel 2, noted that the diversity of the jury would be “of some benefit to the defense.”
There are also five alternates: three men and two women. WESH anchor Jim Payne wondered if the five would be enough to get through the trial. “I hope so,” Eaton said. “The alternative, of course, is a mistrial and then you have to start all over again.”
Eaton, a retired circuit judge, said he thought jury selection would take longer than it did. He predicted the opening statements will take four hours. They will start at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Orlando.
The general belief is the trial will take six to eight weeks. Eaton predicted a shorter trial. “Once you get started, it’s going to go fairly fast,” Eaton said. He sees the state taking 10 days to put on its case.
WESH’s Amanda Ober noted that the 17 jurors from Pinellas County would have to prepare family and employers for being away for possibly two months in Orlando.
WFTV’s Belich said that Anthony “fidgeted before the jurors were sworn in and afterward she appeared to be scared.”
