JERMAINE, GEMAYEL and DURRELL MITCHELL - 11, 5 and 2 yo (1988) - Fort Wayne IN
FORT WAYNE-There are some traumas that can never
be forgotten- like the loss of a child. The tragic loss of three
children in a senseless, blind murder can only be described as an
indescribable horror. That's the horror Larry Mitchell, and his family,
have not been able to forget for 23 years.
On May 21, 1988, Mitchell and his wife Sandra's world was turned
upside down when three of their children-11-year-old Jermaine,
five-year-old Gemayel and twoyear- old Durrell-were murdered in an early
morning arson at their 2928 Central Drive home. And as if to emphasize
the senselessness of such acts of violence, everything thing about the
investigation of the crime indicates that Mitchell and his family were
not the intended targets.
Various stories have circulated through the streets that the
murder was the result of someone attempting to kill another person over
an illegal drug dispute-but that had nothing to do with Mitchell, his
wife or his three slain children. In the subsequent years, the murder is
still on the books as one of the most heinous crimes Fort Wayne has
ever seen.
More than two decades later, the crime still remains unsolved,
and while Mitchell has found some peace in turning to God's word and
comfort, worldly justice has yet to be served.
Still, he has utilized the tragedy to point out the need for the
community to be ever vigilant when it comes to protecting our children.
This past Saturday, May 21, the anniversary of their deaths,
Mitchell again visited that now empty lot in the 2900 block of Central
Drive to place a wreath and pictures of Jermaine, Gemayel and Durrell at
the site in their remembrance- and to pray and read scriptures. He also
issued the following statement days prior to the memorial service to
help prevent other such tragedies.
