DANIEL NEWVILLE - 18 yo (2002) - New London MN
NEW LONDON, Minn. (KSAX) - Nearly nine years after a
Spicer teen was last seen, his father shared what he thinks happened and
what his life has been like since.
Eighteen-year-old Daniel Newville disappeared at an Aug 1, 2002 New London party and hasn't been found.
Nearly nine years later, with no real answers, his father, Russ Newville said he still thinks back to that day and wonders.
"I try not to dwell on exactly what happened. But I know it was no
good. It was no good. And I know they killed him and he's dead. I know
this," Russ Newville said.
"I bumped into his good friend, and he told me somethin' bad had
happened to him at a party, but he didn't know what, (shortly after the
party)" Russ said.
He said Daniel had left in the past but never for more than a few days.
"It was exactly one week, after the day he got out, that i went down
to the police station and filed a missing person report," Russ said.
But authorities said they have no record of that report and weren't
informed until a month and a half after Daniel was last seen.
"He took nothin, you know, he wouldn't have run, and where would he go?" Russ said.
Despite several rumors that still circulate, Russ has his own beliefs on what happened.
"There's 100 of 'em out there and that's why the cops are so confused." "What I
can narrow it down to is, he was at this party, and either he owed them
money, or they think he snitched on them in jail, or something." "They
gave him some bad drugs and then they came up behind him and hit him in
the back of the head with a pipe ... Then they cut his throat and then
they went and dumped him."
Russ said he was told someone was seen using a backhoe to dig in a
septic tank near New London in the dark that night, but Kandiyohi County
Sheriff Dan Hartog said there's no evidence of that.
"There was no indication that there had been any type of fresh digging or anything like that," Hartog said.
"He's there, or the other strong one is he's right in that house," Russ Newville said.
The owners of the home have since moved out, and the current owner
said the house has been thoroughly checked by authorities over the years
and nothing has been found.
Seventeen miles away, in Willmar, Russ said life has changed drastically since that night.
"I've been on a downhill spiral ever since it's happened and ... It's
pretty sad when you can say in the last ten years, your best years were in Iraq."
Russ rejoined the Army at age 45 to find a new
focus and was deployed to Iraq, but didn't get his job back when he
returned and still struggles to find work, and last Nov., his home was destroyed in a fire.
But a photo album with pictures of Daniel survived the flames and
help keep his memory alive, but Russ still blames himself for allowing
him to go down the wrong path.
"I think about him everyday." "He was my fishing buddy. He was my
buddy." "He just made a few mistakes and got hung up with the wrong crowd," he said.
"When it all boils down to it, it's no one's fault but my own." "He
was my only son ... It just hurts me I did him wrong." "It sure would be
nice to put closure ... Him to be found and given the proper burial."
"I just wish somebody out there would come forward and do the right thing," Russ said.
Anyone with any information regarding Daniel Newville's disappearance
is asked to contact the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office at (320) 214-6700.
