Deputies say a 26-year-old man suffocated a 1-year-old, but friends and
relatives of the man who is charged say that he could not have done it.James Allen Johnson, 26, of Travelers Rest, is charged with homicide by child abuse.EMS workers called deputies to a home on Fews Chapel Road in Greer on May 25 after the baby stopped breathing.Greenville County deputies said the child's mother told them her daughter had choked while drinking tea from a glass. The mother said she began CPR and called 911.The
baby was transported to the hospital where she remained in critical
condition until she was pronounced dead on May 27. An autopsy performed
on May 28 determined that the child had not choked on tea, but had been
suffocated.Greenville County Coroner Karie Cain identified the
child as Nevaeh Denise Sprouse. Johnson, who goes by the nickname
Parker, is the live-in boyfriend of the baby's mother, but he is not the
biological father of the child.Deputies said the autopsy results
and other evidence led to Johnson's arrest. Cain said the child’s body
had bruises consistent with abuse.Master Deputy Sam Cureton said, "We do know that the suffocation occurred at the hands of Mr. Johnson, by whatever means."Some of Johnson’s friends and neighbors said they don’t believe he would kill a child.Johnson’s
friend, Donald Coryell, said, "He's been so worried, his nerves are
wrecked. And then when he found out she died, he fell to his knees and
cried."Johnson was arrested late Thursday and is being held in the Greenville County Detention Center without bond. The
baby’s mother has not been charged, but the investigation is
continuing. Johnson’s friends are hoping that the investigation will
ultimately clear him.Johnson’s friend Donald Coryell said, "He's
the type of person -- when it comes to kids, he'd put himself in harm's
way, break his bones -- whatever he needs to do to keep the kids safe."

A mother is accused of letting her live-in boyfriend kill her 1-year-old
daughter and then lying to deputies about what happened.Greenville
County sheriff's deputies and the U.S. Marshals arrested Georgia Ann
Sprouse, 30, of Greer, at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at her friend's
house in Laurens County.
Sprouse has been charged with aiding and
abetting homicide by child abuse and accessory after the fact of
homicide by child abuse. After her daughter, Nevaeh, was found
unresponsive by EMS workers on May 25, Sprouse told deputies the baby
had choked on tea she tried to drink from a glass. (Full Story)Nevaeh
was transported to the hospital where she remained in critical
condition until she was pronounced dead on May 27. An autopsy performed
on May 28 determined that Nevaeh had not choked on tea, but had been
suffocated.James Allen Johnson, 26, of Travelers Rest, is charged
with homicide by child abuse in Neveah's death. Johnson, who goes by

Nevaeh's biological father.Deputies said the autopsy results and
other evidence led to Johnson's arrest. Cain said the child’s body had
bruises consistent with abuse.Master Deputy Sam Cureton said,
"We do know that the suffocation occurred at the hands of Mr. Johnson,
by whatever means."According
to Sprouse's arrest warrant, she allowed the injuries to be inflicted
on Nevaeh. The warrants state excessive corporal punishment resulted in
the baby's death.Sprouse also gave misleading statements to investigators,
according to another warrant.The
warrant said Sprouse impeded the death investigation by giving
statements that led investigators to believe that Nevaeh's death was
caused by accidental choking.Sprouse and Johnson are both being held
without bond at the Greenville County Detention Center.Nevaeh's
father, Mark Gore, told News 4's Mandy Gaither, "I called (the
Department of Social Services) over a month ago when I knew (Ann) was
with that Parker boy because I had suspicions that he wasn't right...if
(D.S.S.) would have investigated my call, then maybe my child would
still be living today."Gore also said, "In my heart I feel that
Ann didn't do it, but if it comes to light that she did that, she needs
to accept the consequences. But, it's not like her to have done it.
"Sprouse had been staying with a friend, Candy Hatley, for the past two days.
Hatley said Sprouse was arrested at her home in Laurens."(Sprouse)
just said she wants justice for her baby. And you know, that (Johnson)
done it. That's all she kept telling me. She told me that she was in
the bed sleeping when it happened," said Hatley. "She's asked for a
lie detector test three times and they won't give her one. I don't
believe she done something like this."Hatley said she talked to Sprouse in jail.
"She was crying. She just doesn't understand why she's in there," said Hatley.

Message to Gore: She didn't have to do it. If she allowed her prick to do it there is no difference. She needs to be in a cage for the duration of her sorry life.
As does her prick.

A Greenville County woman is charged in
connection with the death of her one-year-old daughter, Greenville
County Deputies said Wednesday.Georgia Ann
Sprouse faces one count of Homicide by Child Abuse/Aiding and Abetting
and one count of Accessory After the Fact to Felony. She was arrested on
Wednesday by the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, with assistance
from the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force and the Laurens County
Sheriff's Office. Investigators said Sprouse was located on Pond View
Drive in Laurens County.Deputies said they
were called to a home on Fews Chapel Road in Greer on May 25 because the
baby was not breathing. At the time, deputies said Sprouse told them
that her daughter, Nevaeh Sprouse, had drunk tea from a glass and began
choking. Deputies said Sprouse told them she began CPR on the baby and
called for help. But deputies say Sprouse
kept changing her story about what happened to the baby. Investigators
said an autopsy showed the child had been suffocated, and later died at
the hospital on May 27th.Greenville County
Deputies said Sprouse didn't do anything to help save the baby's life.
Neighbor Mildred Arledge lives next door to the home where the baby was
found unresponsive. Arledge told FOX Carolina exclusively that she had
never seen Sprouse, or the baby, and was told they had been visiting the
people who live at 1942 Fews Chapel Road in Greer.26-year-old
James Johnson was arrested and charged with homicide by child abuse in
early June. Deputies said Johnson is not the baby's biological father.
People who knew Johnson and Sprouse told FOX Carolina that Johnson lived
with the baby's mother. The arrest warrants
for the baby's mother say Sprouse "did allow injuries to be inflicted
as the result of excessive corporal punishment which resulted in the
eventual death of the victim." Deputies said Johnson committed the
suffocation, but deputies said Sprouse didn't do anything to stop or
save her baby's life.

A Greer mother who police say allowed her infant child to be beaten
by a live-in boyfriend was in court Tuesday on charges that she didn’t
do enough to protect the child from abuse.Georgia
Ann Sprouse faces charges of homicide by child abuse and accessory
after the fact in the May death of her 1-year-old daughter, Nevaeh
Sprouse.
James
Allen Thompson, Sprouse’s 26-year-old boyfriend, is charged with the
same and is blamed for suffocating the child, who had also shown signs
of being beaten, Greenville County Sheriff’s Investigator Chris Miller
testified during a preliminary hearing.
Sprouse, 30, isn’t accused of suffocating the child, Miller testified.
Sprouse
allowed physical abuse to happen over a period of time, and on the day
of her daughter’s death, she waited to call 911 so that she and her
boyfriend could dispose of marijuana in the house before police became
involved, Miller testified.
Sprouse and Johnson told authorities that the girl had choked while drinking a cup of tea, Miller testified.
Sprouse’s
defense attorney, Chris Posey, asked the judge to dismiss both charges
and downgrade to one charge of neglect of a child.
Posey
told the judge that Sprouse didn’t smother the child and that bruises
believed be caused by beatings didn’t contribute to the girl’s death.
Assistant
Solicitor Kris Hodge argued that Sprouse gave inconsistent statements
to cover up what really happened and didn’t protect her child from
abuse.
Magistrate Diane Cagle ruled that both charges would be presented to a grand jury to consider indictment.
