"Newborn Jane" HAMMOND - Body discovered in trash can - Albany GA
Emergency
responders made a disturbing discovery early Saturday morning in east
Albany. A newborn baby was found dead inside a trash can. Investigators
were called to the scene on Collins Street where the remains of the baby
girl were found wrapped in a blanket.
Right now it's unclear how long the baby had
been dead in that trash can or who put her there. WALB News Ten's
Tayleigh Davis has been following the story all day.
Dougherty County District Attorney, Greg
Edwards, can't say who exactly discovered the newborn, but investigators
have been talking with the mother and witnesses.
A newborn baby girl was found dead in this
trash can at 208 Collins Street. Edwards says the baby appeared to be
premature. He says the mom is 20 years old now.
"We must deal with our teen pregnancy issue,"
said Edwards. "This is another one of the ills that's a result of teen
pregnancy. There are many instances where women don't get the
appropriate pre-natal care or counseling they need."
No one wanted to speak at the home Saturday.
Several parents at the Riverfront Park downtown say they're alarmed
anytime they hear of a tragedy involving a baby. Brooke Lane has a
little girl.
"That makes me really sad because I couldn't
even imagine being without my daughter for five minutes," said Lane. "To
throw your child away in a trash can is really pathetic."
Members of the child death team with the
District Attorney's office will listen to the 911 tapes and continue to
investigate the case. The mom could be facing several charges. Right
now, the minimum charge would be concealing the death of another. It's a
felony offense that could land her in jail for five years.
The medical examiner is performing an autopsy on the baby for further details.

Mother arrested for death of infant in trash can
ALBANY, GA -- Child Death Team Investigator Greg Blackmon says they arrested 20-year-old Deanna Denise Hammond on Tuesday for allegedly leaving her deceased newborn girl in a garbage bin outside of her residence.
Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards says the Albany Police Department is charging Hammond with one count of Concealing the Death of Another.
"The District Attorney's Office has brought another charge: We are also charging her with basically abandonment of a deceased body. This is under a special statute that addresses that particular offense," says Edwards. "It is against the law in effect to discard a human body in an improper way, and the allegation is that Hammond did in fact do this in this particular instance. That's why there's this additional charge in addition to Concealing the Death of Another."
District Attorney Greg Edwards says after they complete a forensic investigation and receive the final autopsy report, Hammond could face additional charges. After she receives additional charges -- if any -- Edwards says the case will then go to Grand Jury for review.
Blackmon says Hammond was taken to the hospital on Saturday for pregnancy complications after she had already given birth. He says Hammond's mother made the 911 call. Blackmon says Hammond later admitted at the hospital that the infant was in a garbage bin outside of her residence at 208 Collins Street.
Edwards says Hammond also has a six-month-old boy which means she conceived again soon after the six-month-old was born.
"Certainly the Department of Family Services is intervening in this investigation. That's part of what they will be doing and they will be looking into those issues," says Edwards.
