Day 17 witnesses
Stephen Shaw
FBI examiner Stephen Shaw told jurors Monday that he compared hair from a brush of Caylee's to samples taken from the remains of her skull, along with the trunk of Casey's car. He said the hair samples were consistent, but that was not a means of positive identification.
Shaw said he also saw further evidence of decomposition on the hairs taken from the child's skull than on the hair found in the trunk.
Prosecutors tried to show a PowerPoint presentation containing color photos of hair samples Shaw analyzed and compared. But defense attorney Jose Baez objected, saying they had not seen the presentation, though both prosecutors and Shaw said they had given the defense black and white versions of the photos.
Judge Perry agreed with Baez, saying he found it "troubling" that the presentation was not given to the defense ahead of time. So the jury never saw the presentation.
The jury did, however, see one photo, in which Shaw pointed out a dark band on a single hair that indicated apparent decomposition.
Shaw explained he compared hair samples from 15 people, males and females between ages 3 and 53. Baez also pointed out that Shaw conducted his study in Virginia during the colder winter months, and Shaw confirmed that heat plays a major role in the decomposition of hair.
Elizabeth Fontaine
Another FBI agent, Fontaine examined the duct tape found near Caylee's remains. She said she could not find any fingerprints on the tape, but she did see something else: The outline of a heart.
Defense attorneys had unsuccessfully fought to keep residue of a heart-shaped sticker on one piece of duct tape out of the trial.
Monday was the first time the jury has heard anything about a sticker, though they did not see any pictures of the residue Monday. Jurors were also out of the courtroom Saturday when prosecutors showed Orange County forensics supervisor Ronald Murdock a photo of a book of heart-shaped stickers found in Casey Anthony's room on Dec. 12, 2008.
Fontaine said she was the second person to look at the three pieces of duct tape she examined. She said her job is to look for visible fingerprints first.
She explained her process clearly to the jury, often referring to examples as seen on the TV series "CSI."
