Casey Anthony: ‘Good Morning America’ won’t show ‘grisly’ tape

That macabre animation of Caylee Anthony’s face came up again this morning on television.
On ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Dan Abrams said it was “a risky move” that the prosecution presented the video, which “showed little Caylee and it transformed into the remains.” George Stephanopoulos explained that the tape “is so grisly, we’re not going to show it right now.”
Casey Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.
On NBC’s “Today,” Savannah Guthrie said that Dr. Jan Garavaglia, the medical examiner, provided a strong moment for the prosecution when the defense cross examined her. “We’re in the fourth week now, and the testimony starts to all kind of flow together,” Guthrie said. “Here’s the medical examiner putting the pieces together for the jurors, saying, you know, this death was not recorded immediately, this child had duct tape on her face. And that’s just not the normal course of business.”
Yet Guthrie also noted that Garavaglia couldn’t rely on science to tell jurors how the child died.
Abrams said Garavaglia provided “a real opening for the defense” with her testimony, but the defense has pointed to George Anthony as covering up Caylee’s drowning death.
“They now can’t build the case that Casey herself staged this crime scene,” Stephanopoulos said.
Abrams said if prosecutors “keep pushing the envelope” with evidence, that could become an issue in an appeal. And the defense could also point to the circus outside the Orange County Courthouse as a reason Casey couldn’t get a fair trial.
Japan had cameras at the trial last week, ABC’s Ashleigh Banfield noted. “It’s been absolutely remarkable, the level of interest,” Banfield said.
WKMG-Channel 6 last night previewed that Cindy Anthony, Casey’s mother, will return to the stand this morning. The prosecution also will play the last video of Caylee.
WKMG legal analyst Mark NeJame said last week was a bad one for the defense because defense attorney Jose Baez couldn’t handle questioning bug expert Dr. Neal Haskell. Baez was “completely overshadowed” by Haskell.
The prosecution is expected to wrap up its case this week.
