"Infant John" COLVER - 17 Months - Daly City/ San Francisco CA
A Daly City father is facing child abuse charges after reportedly
dropping his 17-month-old son into a hot oven while teaching the toddler
the dangers of banging his hand against its open door.
Gregory David Colver Jr., 20, began jury trial this week on the felony charges stemming from the Dec. 28 incident.
Prosecutors say Colver was caring for his son that night while
his girlfriend, the child’s mother, worked. When the woman rushed her
son to Seton Hospital with second- and third-degree burns on his legs,
Colver reportedly told authorities that, while he slept, the boy had
turned on the oven and crawled inside.
Daly City police reported later discovering Colver had turned on
the oven to cook a pizza and spotted his son banging his hand against
the open door. To teach the child not to touch the hot oven, Colver
lifted the squirming boy’s legs into the oven but lost his grip, said
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
The boy reportedly landed on the oven’s heated coils, burning his legs, and Colver called his girlfriend home from work.
Colver has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains free from custody on a $100,000 bail bond.
Attorneys begin pretrial motions Tuesday followed by jury selection on Wednesday.
If convicted, he faces approximately nine years in prison, said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

The lawyer for a San Mateo County man charged with child abuse after his
son was burned in an oven says the 17-month-old climbed inside the
appliance while his father slept.
Defense attorney Mara Feiger told jurors Friday that
20-year-old Gregory Colver Jr. of Daly City falsely confessed to holding
the child in the 425-degree oven in order to teach him about its
dangers. Feiger said Colver told that story because the boy's
mother feared authorities would take the boy away if they knew he'd been
unsupervised during the Dec. 28 incident. The toddler suffered second-
and third-degree burns on his legs.Prosecutor Shin-Mee Chang said it was "completely implausible" that such
a young child could operate the oven and crawl inside without burning
his hands, the San Mateo Daily Journal reports. Colver faces approximately nine years in prison.

How horrifying! This poor baby will be traumatized for life not to mention the medical treatment and surgeries that will be necessary for the burns. How can any person put a baby in an oven! This guy should have gotten life and throw away the key because it's obvious he has no sense in the world. Everytime I think I've heard every kind of child abuse, I read an article like this. It's so sickening.

Gregory Colver Convicted and Sentenced for Burning Son in Oven
Published by Junior Staff Writer on October 14, 2011
A Daly City man found guilty of dropping his 17-month-old son onto a
hot oven rack, causing second and third-degree burns, was sentenced
today to a year in county jail and five years supervised probation.
Gregory Colver, 21, was convicted on July 18 of one felony count of
child endangerment and one felony count of cruelty to a child, with the
special enhancement of causing great bodily injury. He was accused of
holding his son inside a hot oven and dangling him over the oven rack on
Dec. 28, 2010 in an attempt to teach him about the dangers of hot
surfaces.Colver and his girlfriend, the boy’s mother, originally
claimed that the boy had turned the oven on and fallen into the racks on
his own. Investigators became suspicious when details of the couple’s
story didn’t match up and doctors said the horizontal and vertical burns
weren’t consistent with the accident Colver had described. Colver was
arrested on Dec. 30, and allegedly confessed to police that he had been
trying to teach his son a lesson by holding him inside the oven. He
later retracted the confession. Colver was given credit for 266 days of
time served, according to a San Mateo County Superior Court clerk. He is
currently in custody.

How unbelievable!!!! The abuser was only sentenced to ONE YEAR in jail and he has already served 266 days of time served so he will be out soon. What the heck is wrong with the judge. He could have given him NINE years and he only gave him one. This idiot won't learn a thing. The next thing we'll hear is the judge will give the child back to the abusing father and next time he'll kill the child. This is just ridiculous!

You're so right. This POS will soon be free to abuse and murder other defenseless babies. I hope they beat him to a bloody pulp while he's locked up.
Stupid judge needs to be kicked off the bench. This poor baby suffered horribly. If the POS had done this to a dog he would have received a much longer sentence.
