Prosecutors: Mother Murdered Infant, Then Took Him Shopping

Chicago, IL — Toyrianna Smith, 20, is accused of killing her 3-month-old baby boy, then toting his body around in a BabyBjorn carrier while she went shopping.

According to prosecutors, Smith took the infant, Ken Blackman Jr., and her 3-year-old daughter to a friend’s house Wednesday night and spent the evening hanging out, getting her hair done and drinking vodka. When the festivities were over, Smith and her little family retired to a guest room for the night.

At some point during the night, the baby began to cry. Smith reportedly told police she placed a blanket over the infant’s head and smacked him in the face three or four times to quiet him. Oddly enough, it worked…but much like the snooze on alarm clock, it only works for a little while.

Some time later, Ken Jr. began squawking again – because that’s what babies do – disturbing his mother’s slumber once more. Instead of popping a bottle or a (breast) in the kid’s mouth, Smith again covered his face with a blanket and smacked him around a few times. Why not? It worked the first time, right? This time, though, she took it a step further and pressed down on his tiny body until his arms started jerking and he was quiet.

The next morning, a fully-rested Smith dressed little Ken Jr., avoided the kid’s father when he came to pick him up, plopped the dead baby into the chest carrier and went shopping.

A couple stores and several hours later, Smith was at a neighbor’s home when said neighbor realized little Ken Jr. wasn’t just sleeping soundly – he wasn’t breathing. After seeing blood on the infant’s blanket, the neighbor called 911. Ken Jr. was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner’s office said Ken Jr. had been dead for 8 to 14 hours. The cause of death, suffocation.
When questioned, Smith admitted to killing the child because he wouldn’t stop crying. She’s been charged with first-degree murder and was ordered held on $1 million bond.
