"Baby John" DAVIS - 6 Months/ 9 pounds - Chester (S of Jackson) TN
A Mid-South mother and father were arrested Thursday and charged with the starvation death of their baby.
Stephanie McCarley and Devin Jay Davis of Chester County, Tennessee are charged
with first degree murder and child abuse in the death of the 6-month-old son.
The child died in April, but it took until now for investigators to discover exactly why the baby died.
Friends of the couple said they were shocked by the charges.
"It's kind of said, of course," said friend Neocha White. "It's like really weird because she used to live next to me."
An autopsy report showed the child died from complications of chronic
malnutrition. McCarley told police she was the primary caregiver and
that she did feed the baby.
Mark Jackson, who now lives in the couple's old house, said Davis worked a lot.
"He worked full time," said Jackson. "He worked two or three jobs and he would get home late."
Davis told police when he fed the baby, he ate well. Jackson said when Davis found out why his son died, he was shocked.
"When the autopsy came back, he was upset," said Jackson.
The 6-month-old baby weighed just nine pounds.
The couple was behind bars Thursday. They are being held on a $250,000 bond.
