Divers pulled the body of a missing 11-year-old girl, Celina Cass, from the Connecticut
River on Monday not far from her New Hampshire home, and her death was
being investigated as suspicious, authorities said.

A dive team from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department found her body near a hydropower
station in West Stewartstown, a New Hampshire town of about 1,000
residents near the Canadian border.
"Based on what we have seen visually we are treating it as suspicious," said
Jane Young, a New Hampshire senior assistant attorney general. "She was
located in the water so we are trying to determine how her body was put in the water."
Young declined to give details about the cause of death, citing the need for an autopsy.
Cass was last seen at home at about 9 p.m. local time on July 25. The 5-foot
5-inch tall Cass, who has long brown hair and hazel eyes, was wearing a
pink shirt, pink pullover and blue shorts before she disappeared, authorities said.
Over the weekend, the Federal Bureau of Investigation offered a $25,000 reward for
information leading to the girl and the arrest of anyone responsible for
her disappearance. In addition, a private citizen to offer a $5,000
reward for information leading to her whereabouts. The FBI received
about 500 tips in the case, Young said.
The underwater discovery of her body was "not the way we wanted to bring Celina home," said Young.

STEWARTSTOWN, N.H. -- Investigators hope an autopsy set for Tuesday on an 11-year-old New Hampshire girl will shed light on her disappearance and death.

Live Updates

After nearly a week of massive searches and volunteers handing out fliers with photos of a missing fifth-grader, residents in this town of 800 in far northern New Hampshire are absorbing the bitter news that there will be no happy ending after divers recovered Celina Cass' body from the Connecticut River on Monday a quarter-mile from her home.

Celina, who lived with her older sister, mother and stepfather a mile from the Canadian border, was last seen at her home computer around 9 p.m. on July 25 and was gone the next morning, authorities have said. Police said there was no sign of a struggle and there was no indication she ran away or someone took her.

On Monday, the intense search came to an abrupt end when New Hampshire Fish and Game Department divers found her body near a hydroelectric dam that spans the Connecticut River between her hometown, Stewartstown, and Canaan, Vt., Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young said.

"We're all very devastated," said Jeffry Pettit, whose daughter Kaylin was a friend of Celina's, after word that the body had been found.

Based on what divers found, her death was described as suspicious, and investigators were treating the case as a criminal investigation pending autopsy results, Young said.

At the peak, more than 100 federal, state and local law enforcement officers descended upon Stewartstown, searching a mile-wide area around her home, including woods and ponds. Law enforcement officers went so far as to have a cellphone tower erected to assist in communications.

Fliers featuring pictures of Celina with a gap-toothed smile had been put up throughout Stewartstown and neighboring communities. Residents passed out purple and pink ribbons and held vigils.

No one was more baffled by Celina's disappearance than her friends and family, who described her as studious and reliable, shy and timid, not the type to run away from home.

"People don't tend to think it's going to happen up here," said Karen Ramsey, of Lancaster, referring to the tight-knit, rural community. "It doesn't just happen in the city."

According to several media outlets, Celina's stepfather was taken to a hospital Monday. MSNBC reported that Wendell Noyes was taken by ambulance after lying down in the family's driveway and rolling around, and video showed him dropping to his knees and then lying with his head resting on his hands.

A spokeswoman for Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital, in Colebrook, N.H., said she couldn't comment on whether Noyes was taken to the hospital on Monday.

In 2003, Noyes was involuntarily committed to a hospital in Concord after he entered his girlfriend's house in the middle of the night and threatened to throw her down stairs, according to court documents. An order signed by a probate judge indicated Noyes suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

A court motion filed by his attorney at the time indicated Noyes received a medical discharge from the Air Force because of mental illness. The attorney didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Monday.

Celina's death was tough for law enforcement officials, as well as residents. State police and FBI agents from as far away as New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia turned the local school into a bustling command post. The FBI brought in a special team specializing in child abductions.

"We have brought Celina home, obviously not the way we wanted to bring her home," said Young, her voice breaking with emotion.

NH Girl Celina Cass Body Found in CT River: Police Probe Focuses on Family Home And StepDad Wendell Noyes

Posted by Blink | Tuesday 2 August 2011 12:04 am

West Stewartstown, NH- Celina Cass, 11 year old Canaan Middle School Student and basketball player with a luminous grin, was recovered from the Connecticut River this afternoon.

For nearly a week, the tight knit community of Stewartstown, with a population under 1000, held vigils for the shy tween, while over 100 police and FBI agents dedicated unparalleled manpower to the search for her.

At 10:30 this morning, the remains believed to be that of Celina Cass, were located following efforts to lower the Connecticut River, less than 1 mile from her home.

The sister of Keith and Kayla was removed at 5:30PM EST this afternoon.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity to www.blinkoncrime.com, sources inside the investigation have confirmed that electronic forensic evidence led to Celina’s recovery today.

While Celina’s stepfather, Wendell Noyes, has not been named a suspect in her disappearance and subsequent death, ” Mr. Noyes’s previous mental diagnosis are a clear factor in this case.”

(Editors Note: My quote in response to a request to analyze this case: Wendy Noyes is a creeper. I would not let him look at an enemies kids yearbook. This child went from images of an average child of her age, to a blossoming young lady. If you have anyone in the house, or periphery in the preceeding 72 hours of her disappearance with any sexual issues, or fringe of same, this is your top tier priority. StepMonster is worthy of further conversation, fyi.)

Mr. Noyes has a history of hospitalization, both voluntary and involuntary. In a previous incident involving a former girlfriend and her family, Noyes was arrested, and subsequently hospitalized as a result of an admitting resident finding that he was a paranoid schizophrenic. During the criminal phase of this allegation, Noyes was classified as “Unfit to stand trial.”

Outside the Cass/Noyse residence this afternoon, following the announcement Celina was recovered, Noyse appeared outside screaming and rolling in the lawn, necessitating his most recent psychiatric evaluation.

Requests for a comment or statement from the Cass Family have been unanswered at the time of this publication.

Her body was discovered about 10:30 a.m., but wasn't pulled from the water until about 5 p.m. Officials did not explain why it took so long to recover her remains.

"We have brought Celina home, but not the way we wanted to bring her home," New Hampshire senior assistant Attorney General Jane Young said with a slight quaver in her voice.

The body was pulled from the river about a quarter mile from the 11-year-old girl's home in West Stewartstown, a hamlet of only 800 people.

Young said the girl's disappearance has been reclassified as a criminal investigation.

so why did it take so many hours to remove the body - was she in clothing? and they quickly ruled it a criminal investigation so they must have some evidence that she didn't just wander off and fall in the river?

The press conference is starting now.
by Trent Spiner/WMUR Staff 7:03 PM

The medical examiner says the cause and manner of Celina's death remain "pending" further investigation.

Jane Young says a criminal investigation remains ongoing into Celina's death.

"The fact that the body was in the water certainly plays a part in the autopsy."
Senior Assistant Attorney Jane Young says they are still awaiting toxicology results and further investigation before being able to determine how Celina died.

Jane Young will not comment on whether they have a person or person of interest: "We continue to look at all facets of this case."

The AG's office says authorities were back at the dam today to look for more information.

The press conference has ended.

The biggest update provided by the AG's office is that an autopsy has not conclusively determine how Celina died. Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young says the investigation is still ongoing.

In other cases we have covered toxicology results have taken weeks, especially if the state needs to send samples to an out-of-state lab for certain tests to be completed.

Well according to the 8:00 PM press conference tonight the manner and cause of death are still "pending" while waiting for results of toxicology reports and continued criminal investigation. Wonder if DNA is included in toxicology. So she obviously wasn't strangled or shot or brutally beaten. Can't find any comments from her mother and that seems unusual doesn't it? I'd like to know what time her mother retired, did the step-dad go to bed at the same time. Just who was it that saw Celina at the computer at 9:00. Was her sister home then? I did read that where Celina was found is a known teen hang-out, but then folks say she was not the type of child to sneak out of her home. After putting my chores on hold since 5:45 because the conf. was supposed to be at 6:30, I must say I was hoping to find out more detail about what happened to this young girl. I keep thinking (and this is not right, I know) that the step-dad was involved. Just because. It would be refreshing if she really did sneak out and drowned. Very sad, but better then being murdered by someone she trusted. IDK, my mind is being warped by all these murders.

---While I wholeheartedly agree with you. We are not in a position to label it Murder until LE does. They must have something that they are keeping secreted. As I heard earlier, "electronic forensic evidence", has led them to the criminal investigation label.

STEWARTSTOWN – Dozens of police, including
FBI agents, continue to investigate the death of an 11-year-old New
Hampshire girl found in the Connecticut River on Monday.

Celina Cass’ death is considered suspicious and the investigation is criminal, according to Senior
Assistant Attorney General Jane Young.

An autopsy was conducted on the girl’s
body Tuesday, however the cause and manner of her death are still
pending, according to Young.

Investigators are waiting for the results
of toxicology tests, which usually take four to six weeks. They expect
to get those results sooner because of the ongoing investigation, Young
said at a press conference Tuesday night.

Authorities had said that Celina, who
lived with her older sister, mother and stepfather a mile from the
Canadian border, was last seen at her home computer about 9 p.m. July 25
and was gone the next morning. Police said there was no sign of a
struggle, and there was no indication she ran away or that someone took her.

Based on what investigators saw when they recovered Cass’ body Monday, they began conducting a criminal inquiry.

“We are treating it as a suspicious death,” Young said. “We are treating it as a criminal investigation.”

As part of the investigation, police from
the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force continue to interview
registered sex offenders in the area, which is standard in the case of a missing child, Young said.

In addition, investigators are interviewing witnesses and reviewing “a number of pieces of evidence.”

Young said dozens of officers are working in Stewartstown and the surrounding area, including a number of FBI agents.

Cass was found by divers Monday in the Connecticut River less than half a mile from her home, a week after she went missing.

“We have brought Celina home, obviously
not the way we wanted to bring her home,” Young said Monday. “We are
treating her death as a suspicious death at this time.”

Distraught members of the close-knit rural community came together in a candlelight vigil Monday night to
embrace and support the family of the 11-year-old Cass, just hours after
police divers recovered her body from the river.

“I’ve known her since she was in diapers,” said family friend Shawn Harding, 36. “Her mom used to babysit my two boys.”

Harding, a lifelong resident of Stewartstown, said he and the rest of the town are dumbstruck by the girl’s death.

“This is a small town. Nothing ever
happens here. The only thing we got for crime around here is drugs. But
something like this happening to a little girl -- no, that doesn’t happen around here.”

The crowd sang “Amazing Grace” and young girls cried.

Friends and neighbors of the missing girl
at Monday night’s vigil wrote messages on balloons and released them to the setting sun.

“Our newest guardian angel,” wrote Jennifer Mathieu, who taught Celina in second and third grade.

“She was a dream student,” Mathieu said.
“If one of her friends was in a bad mood, she was the first to go over
and try to cheer them up. She wanted everyone to be happy.”

Fourth-grade classmate Skylar Tricca, 9,
said she’ll miss the girl with whom she used to play basketball and who
would help her with school work. “We’d talk about friends at school,”
she said. “And we’d talk about her homework and help each other.”

School nurse Kirsten Lyons said the tragedy brought the town together.

“We wanted her home,” Lyons said. “It’s time to pray for the family now and heal.”

News reports indicated Celina’s
stepfather was taken to a hospital Monday morning. Video showed Wendell
Noyes, who has a history of schizophrenia, repeatedly lying down in the
family’s driveway and rolling around.

Young urged the people of Stewartstown to
be vigilant, and said there’s no indication of heightened danger to the
community at large. She said it’s unclear when more information would be released.

Celina Cass: Police Confiscate Ford Pickup Truck From Home
Aug. 03 2011 02:54 PM
After Celina Cass’ body was found on Monday in the Connecticut River, police have been investigating the cause of death, searching her home – where she was last seen – on Wednesday for answers.
The 11-year-old who went missing on July 25 disappeared from her room late in the evening, where she lived with her biological mother, stepfather, and older sister. Her body was recovered a few days later in the river, close to a hydroelectric dam near her home, local reports revealed.

Though authorities suspected no signs of trouble in the home when the search initially launched according to Fox News, police now believe foul play was involved in the death of the young girl “based on what [they had] seen visually.”

Whether the family members are connected to what appears to be an evolving homicide case still remains unclear.

New Hampshire Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young told The Boston Globe, “Now because we are treating this as a suspicious death, we are going back [to the house] to see if there’s any evidence that could assist in our criminal investigation.”

The Globe reported that police cars were seen outside of the Cass home Wednesday morning, where investigators thoroughly searched for clues. A Ford pickup was also taken from the home, possibly belonging to the stepfather or mother, and perhaps able to provide some answers to the case.

Investigators trying to determine what
caused the death of an 11-year-old New Hampshire girl have taken away a
silver pickup truck that had been parked near her home.

On Wednesday morning, investigators were
focusing their attention on the Stewartstown home of Celina Cass, whose
body was pulled from the Connecticut River after an intense manhunt for
the girl.

New Hampshire Death an Accident?

Authorities calling death 'suspicious'

The fifth-grader had been missing for a week
before her body was found in the river on Monday. The girl was last
seen the night of July 25 in her home where she lived with her mother,
stepfather and 13-year-old sister.

Jane Young, New Hampshire senior assistant
attorney general, said Tuesday that investigators are waiting for
further toxicology reports before making any determinations in the death
of Celina Cass. Authorities are calling her death "suspicious."

Meanwhile, Jeanine Brady, a family friend
and the employer of Celina's mother, says the girl's body has been
turned over to the family and a service is being planned. Brady won't
say where or when the service would be held. She says it will be
private.

Young would not go into details about the initial autopsy results but said, "both the cause and manner of death are pending."

After an extensive search for the child --
which included help from the FBI -- divers discovered her body Monday
morning near a hydroelectric dam that spans the Connecticut River
between her hometown and Canaan, Vt., not far from the Canadian border.

"We have made no determination on where her body was eventually put in the river," Young said on Monday.

Authorities have said there was no sign of a
struggle inside the home, and there was no indication the girl ran away
or that someone took her.

"Based on what we have seen visually, we are treating it as suspicious," Young said.

Celina's father, Adam Laro, had described
his daughter to Fox News as "shy but very friendly" and said he can't
imagine she'd leave on her own.

"I can't picture why she would leave at
night," said Laro, who was in the hospital when Celina was last seen.
"She seemed to be happy where she was."

Her stepfather, Wendell Noyes, described her
as a quiet girl who would not have left the family's three-story home
on her own. Noyes, who reportedly has a history of schizophrenia, was
taken by ambulance to a hospital Monday morning, though the reason for
his hospitalization it not yet known.

Young told FoxNews.com last week that
authorities did not issue an Amber Alert for Celina because the case did
not meet the criteria for one. Amber Alerts usually require a
description of a vehicle or person the child was last with, Young said.

The girl's close-knit community held a
candlelight vigil for the girl on Monday, just hours after her body was
pulled from the river, the Boston Herald reports.

"She was a dream student," Jennifer Mathieu,
who taught Celina in second and third grade, said of the girl. "If one
of her friends was in a bad mood, she was the first to go over and try
to cheer them up. She wanted everyone to be happy."

In the search for the tall, gap-toothed
girl, investigators knocked on hundreds of doors and posted fliers with
her photo throughout Stewartstown and nearby communities. Law
enforcement agencies had set up a command post at the local school.

The FBI had offered a $25,000 reward for any
information leading to Celina's whereabouts and an anonymous donor had
added $5,000 to the reward.

Aug. 3, 2011
Police investigating the suspicious death of 11-year-old Celina Cass focused on the fifth grader's home today, taking a truck that neighbors said was driven by the girl's stepfather.

Investigators hauled away a silver pickup truck from the Cass home this afternoon, part of their continued search for evidence and witnesses.

Neighbor Shannon Towle told ABCNews.com that Wendell Noyes, Celina's stepfather, drives a truck matching that description. She often sees Noyes at her husband's West Stewartstown store, Towles Mini Mart, where he is a regular customer.

"I know he drives a pickup," she said. "It's silver."

She said in the small town of 800 the fact that he drives a silver pickup is "common knowledge."

The Associated Press also reported today that neighbors identified the pickup truck as a vehicle that is driven by Noyes.

Celina Cass' Stepfather Wendell Noyes: Past Arrest, Strange Behavior

Noyes, 47, was taken by ambulance to a hospital Monday after behaving bizarrely. His odd behavior and hospitalization came about the same time that searchers found the girl's body in a nearby lake next to a dam.

The house was later surrounded by crime scene tape.

Court documents obtained by ABC News reveal that Celina's stepfather, Wendell Noyes, has a troubled past.

In 2003, the stepfather was involuntarily committed to a hospital because of schizophrenia and arrested for threatening an ex-girlfriend, according to court documents.

Noyes was charged with violating a protective order held by his ex-girlfriend and for criminal trespassing, criminal threatening and hindering apprehension. The girlfriend, who lived with her two kids at the time, said Noyes broke into her home while she was sleeping, lifted her mattress and slammed it down and then threatened to throw her down the stairs.

While awaiting trial, a judge ruled Noyes incompetent to stand trial and ordered him to be involuntarily placed in a hospital. Judge Richard Hampe wrote that Noyes' mental illness creates "a potentially serious likelihood of danger to himself and others." A forensic examiner deemed Noyes a paranoid schizophrenic who likely developed his mental illness while in the Air Force, according to court documents.

So far nobody, including Noyes, has been named a suspect in Celina's disappearance and death.

New Hampshire Town Prepares for Celina Cass' Funeral, and Cause of Death

Assistant Attorney General Jane Young said Tuesday evening that Celina's autopsy has been completed and the cause and manner of death are still pending.

A dive team pulled Celina's remains from the Connecticut River Monday, just a quarter mile from her hometown of West Stewartstown, N.H.

"The death certificate indicates the cause and manner of death are pending toxicology reports and further investigation," Young said at a brief news conference Tuesday evening.

Despite these findings, Young said, the Attorney General's office continues to investigate the death as suspicious based on "a visual observation of Miss Cass' body both in and out of water." Young warned the community to remain vigilant.

"It's kind of overwhelming for the whole town," said Shannon Towle, 48, who lives across the street from the Cass family. "I just don't think they're sharing everything. I hope they have more to go on."

The town is scared, Towle said, adding she's especially worried because she has a 13-year-old daughter.

Celina, was last seen Monday evening, July 25, at a computer in the home where she lives with her mother, stepfather and 13-year-old sister.

As the town awaits more information about Celina's death, her body has been turned over to the family, the Associated Press reported.

The memorial service for Celina Cass will be in West Stewartstown, according to a Facebook post from consignment shop Lads and Ladybugs, where Celina's mother, Louisa Noyes, works. The store will be closed until Monday, August 8.

Despite the town's heartbreak over Celina's death, West Stewartstown will hold its annual children's festival, called Stewartstown Days, in honor of Celina.

"We're hoping this is going to be the first step in our healing process," a festival committee member told ABCNews.com.

The stepfather of 11-year-old Celina Cass, whose body was found in a New Hampshire river Monday, has checked into a mental health facility, according to reports.

This is the second hospitalization in the last week for Wendell
Noyes, 47, who also was taken by ambulance on Monday after suffering an
unspecified medical problem shortly after he was seen dropping onto the
ground, lying face down, and flailing. He was released soon after.

There are still no answers
about what happened to Cass, and authorities say they are waiting for
toxicology results before determining a cause of death. Police have not
named any suspects in her death, which authorities are calling
"suspicious."

Noyes is married to Celina Cass's mother, Louisa, who has stayed
out of the media's glare since her daughter went missing. The girl was
last seen at the home where she lived with her mother, stepfather and
older sister on Monday, July 25 around 9 p.m., according to police.

The following morning she had vanished with no signs of a struggle or indication she'd run away, authorities say.

Local news channel WMUR reports that Cass's body was wrapped in a blanket when she was found in the Connecticut River.

Wendell Noyes, who has not been named as a suspect or a person
of interest in the case, has a troubled past: in 2003 he was
involuntarily committed to a hospital
because of schizophrenia and arrested for threatening an ex-girlfriend,
according to court documents, ABC News reports. He was also charged with
violating a protective order held by his ex-girlfriend and for criminal
trespassing, criminal threatening and hindering apprehension.

Details on Celina’s lastnight alive described
By DONNA JORDAN
Colebrook Chronicle

"So much has been said during the past two weeks about what happened on the last night that Celina Cass was seen alive in her Washington Street home in West Stewartstown.

The weekly newspaper, the Colebrook Chronicle, published a review of the last night of Celina’s life in its issue today, in conjunction with today’s edition of The Telegraph.

According to a source close to the family, Celina and her mom, Louisa Noyes, were sitting on the couch in the living room watching “The Secret Life of An American Teenager” together on the ABC Family Channel. When the show was over at 9 p.m., Celina decided to watch another show and was also back and forth on the family computer, which was in the living room. Louisa Noyes said goodnight to her daughter, and went upstairs to go to sleep.

Celina and her sister, Kayla, shared a bedroom in the basement of the apartment house – a finished room furnished with beds for both girls – not an air mattress on the basement floor, as has been previously reported.

There are a total of three bedrooms on the second floor: Louisa’s, another room in which family friend Kevin Mullaney was staying, and a third room where Louisa’s mother-in-law, Tommie Richards, was staying. Tommie, the Chronicle was told, has health issues and was staying overnight with Wendell and Louisa Noyes.

No one knows if Celina went downstairs to her room after her mother went to sleep. The Chronicle has been told that when Mullaney came home, it was around midnight, and he can remember coming into the living room and sitting on the couch; it was believed that Celina was in her bedroom, in her own bed.

In the morning, Tommie Richards left to go to her home, and by 8:15 a.m., Louisa left the house to go to work in Colebrook. Wendell Noyes went to wake up Celina because she had an appointment at 9 a.m. at a local hairdresser shop. But Noyes did not find her in her bed and, after searching the house to see if she was elsewhere, he called Louisa at work to tell her that Celina wasn’t in the apartment. That was around 9:15 a.m......"

Posters note: So Mom was the one who was with her at 9:00 PM and then went upstairs to bed. It doesn't mention the step-dad until the next morning and where was Kayla? That's what I want to know; and where was Wendell. Wouldn't it be logical to question Kayla (if she was home that evening) to see if Celina came to bed? I mean they did share a room.

I know that this isn't the reason Celina died, but I can't help trying to find something we can learn from every sad case. IMO an 11 year old should have been going to bed by 9pm. As a mother, I would never have gone to bed before my child and let them stay up as long as they like.

We cannot even be sure the story the mom told was true.....there was no way I ever went to bed before my kids when they were 11 and even older. Everyone was home and tucked in before I was in bed.....and you are right, to me an 11 year old should have been in bed at 9pm, but know that nowadays parents leave their kids up till all hours, the little girl across the street at 6 doesn't go to bed till after 9pm which is late to me.....but I was a stickler about bedtimes.

Cass investigators to announce reward at Thursday press conference

The state Attorney General’s Office will announce a reward and reward fund for information about the death of Celina Cass last month.

Attorney General Michael Delaney said there will be a press conference at the Attorney General’s Office in Concord at 10 a.m. on Thursday to release information about the reward, as well as a fund set up to increase the reward.

Cass, 11, was last seen at a computer in her West Stewartstown home on July 25. After a massive manhunt that included law enforcement from New Hampshire, Vermont, Canada and a specialized FBI unit for missing children, police found Cass’ body near a hydro-dam in the Connecticut River on Aug. 1.

A preliminary autopsy did not determine Cass’ cause or manner of death, according to Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young, but investigators launched a criminal probe after finding her body in the river, about a half-mile from her home.

The mother of an 11-year-old New Hampshire girl whose body was found a
week after she disappeared from her home says she has separated from
her husband, her daughter's stepfather, and is selling her house.

Celina Cass was last seen alive at her West Stewartstown home July
25. Her body was recovered from the Connecticut River close to home near
the borders of Canada and Vermont. An autopsy failed to pinpoint the
cause and manner of death. Toxicology tests are pending.

There have been no arrests.

A tearful Louisa Cass tells WMUR-TV ( http://bit.ly/o0NRiO) she didn't hear anything the night her daughter disappeared.
