"Toddler John" RILEY - 3 yo/ Accused: Shanika Ann Riley - Orangeburg SC
An Orangeburg County mother has been arrested
and charged with child abuse after her 3-year-old child was found to
have a broken leg and split liver.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said 23-year-old
Shanika Ann Riley was arrested Friday afternoon after hospital
officials called the sheriff's office to report Riley's child was a
victim of child abuse.
"During our initial investigation, Riley told
officers she allowed a woman from Vance to keep her child between
August 8 and August 12 and the child had scratches and bruises when she
picked the child up from her," said Ravenell. "Riley did not provide
specific information about the person who was to have cared for her
child for 4 days, nor did she report the abuse to law enforcement
without being prompted by family members."
According to investigators, the child
suffered a broken leg and a split liver from blunt force trauma while
being cared for at a home in Orangeburg. Deputies said the child also
had bite marks and bruises. Investigators did not release the name of
the caregiver.
The
child is receiving additional medical treatment and the Department of
Social Services has placed the child in the custody of the grandmother.
Ravenell said the investigation is ongoing.
Riley is being held at the Orangeburg Regional Detention Center.

Re: "Toddler John" RILEY - 3 yo/ Accused: Shanika Ann Riley - Orangeburg SC
Shanika Riley is setting herself up to be a fine example of a
worthless "mother." It appears that she would rather protect a man
desperate enough to shack up with her, than protect her own child from
abuse. Sadly, this is all too common in child abuse cases. The mother
turns a blind eye to an abusive boyfriend or spouse, only for their
children to become victims; cast aside for their mothers' romantic conquests.
This appears to be the case with Shanika Riley, 23, of Orangeburg.
You see, police responded to a call from a hospital in which the child
was being examined. The staff notified the police of a potential child
abuse case after discovering that the 3-year old child was suffering
from several bruises, a broken leg and a split liver. The child was also
covered with scratches and bite marks. It's also very important to
point out that the wounds on this child's body varied in stages of
healing. Some of the wounds were older and healing and some were fresh.
Now, remember this detail and keep it in your memory because the story
this idiot gave police is just flat-out false, because the evidence proves otherwise.
Shanika Riley claims that she left her child in
the company of a woman in Vance who didn't give her a name or number to
contact her. Yes, she didn't think her story out thoroughly. She claims
it was a one time thing too, that lasted for four days! If it was, the
poor child wouldn't be suffering with damage in various stages of progress.
Now the story gets interesting. When police asked
Shanika why she didn't seek medical help for her child sooner, she
replied with a fabulously ghetto retort. The police report says she told
authorities that she didn't want police in her business. Wow, ya think?
It's obvious that this person has a lot more to hide than the
horrendous abuse her own flesh and blood endured.
Meanwhile, police and healthcare professionals examined and questioned the little
tyke, who quite eloquently made sure police knew that it wasn't a
strange woman who did these things to him. He balled up his fist and
demonstrated that a man had been beating him. Kudos to this strong
little man for having the courage to speak out for himself, because his
mother obviously wouldn't.
When Shanika Riley was asked about "the
man" she became belligerent. She started screaming at deputies that her
man had nothing to do with it. Well, did they hit a nerve when the
woman's child told on mommy's boyfriend? It certainly seems so! In fact,
her behavior was suspicious enough for her to be arrested and charged
with allowing someone to inflict great bodily harm on a child.
The arrest warrant says:
"The injuries to the victim were visible by the defendant and she did not
seek medical attention until forced by others."
She could face up to five years if convicted, which sadly isn't good
enough. She'll still be of "breeding age" and chances are she'll
continue making decisions that end in her children being injured, abused
and emotionally tormented. Hopefully investigators have documented,
photographic evidence of the bite marks, so they can try to compare them
with the teeth of the man mommy dearest is protecting. Why do so many
women choose to protect their sex-partners over their own beautiful
children? It's despicable, and women like that shouldn't be able to
procreate; not when they contribute to the suffering of the children
they carelessly bring into this world.

Re: "Toddler John" RILEY - 3 yo/ Accused: Shanika Ann Riley - Orangeburg SC
Bond was set on an Orangeburg woman and her boyfriend Monday
after an impassioned plea by investigators for a bond reflecting
repeated allegations of brutal child abuse.
"This here is the child's mother," Orangeburg County Sheriff's
Lt. Ronda Bamberg said. "She did absolutely nothing as her
boyfriend beat her child, broke his leg. As you can see here, he
(the child) was kicked in the chest. That there is a boot mark."
Shanika Ann Riley, 23, of 1773 Fred St., has been charged with
allowing another person to inflict great bodily harm upon a child.
Riley's bond was set at $50,000 surety.
Her boyfriend, 21-year-old Jacob Ross of 295 Perryclear St.,
Orangeburg, is charged with the more serious inflicting great bodily harm upon a child.
Ross was taken into custody Monday. He faces a possible 20 years in prison if convicted.
Byron Gipson, Ross's attorney, asked the court "for a very
reasonable bond," saying his client had his family's support and was not a flight risk.
"He's not evading law enforcement," Gipson said. "He understands
the seriousness of the charge."
Orangeburg County Magistrate Derrick Dash set bond on Ross at
$15,000 surety. Gipson asked for a 10 percent cash option, which was granted.
During Riley's bond hearing immediately after the hearing for
Ross, law enforcement officers said the child had told his mother
he was being viciously assaulted.
"His mother took the child to the hospital and the mother lied
to the hospital personnel, saying that her boyfriend didn't do it,"
Bamberg said. "It was only after an intense investigation by
Investigator (John) Stokes that she finally admitted to the fact
that her boyfriend did this to her son."
Bamberg told Dash that Riley was now six months pregnant and
questioned whether or not the Fred Street woman would allow her
unborn child to be harmed.
"I think we as a society have a responsibility to protect
children," Bamberg said. "If you let her out on a bond, what's
going to happen to that child? Is she willing to allow her
boyfriend to kick her in the stomach and kill it? I don't want that
on my conscience. I think she needs a very high bond or she doesn't
need a bond at all."
Dash stated bond was not meant as a punitive measure but a protection for society.
"As a parent, it is your responsibility to protect that child,"
the judge said. "Had I had (these) other circumstances, my bond
previously would have probably been different. But I'm not going
back and re-do (Ross's) bond."
Law enforcement became involved in the investigation after
hospital staff notified them last Wednesday that a child appeared to have suffered abuse.
A medical examination determined Riley's 3-year-old son had
suffered "bite marks, bruises to the chest area and back. The
victim also suffered a broken leg and a split liver from blunt
force trauma," according to a warrant against the boy's mother.
Investigators noted some of the injuries appeared to be healing,
indicating they were old, while some wounds were fresh.
According to an incident report, Riley told investigators she
didn't seek medical help for her son because "she didn't want the police in her business."
She then told authorities that a woman in Vance had kept her
child. She said that woman inflicted the injuries on her son.
However, when deputies asked about the mystery woman, Riley said
she didn't know her last name, her phone number or where she lived, the report said.
The child told authorities a man he knew as "Ross" had beaten him with his fist, the report said.
